Position Summary:

The School of Education, Health, and Human Services prepares students for successful entry into their profession. We focus on an ethical approach to human well-being and encourage critical thinking and practical application. The Counselor Education Program works to educate persons to become professional counselors and educators through a combination of theoretical and applied approaches. The duties of this full-time, tenure-track position will include teaching core and specialized courses in a CACREP-accredited graduate Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. Service to the department and college are other responsibilities. As an institution that delivers challenging and high-quality educational experiences to a diverse group of learners, the successful candidate must demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to diversity and gender issues. The successful candidate may be asked to teach courses in a distance learning format.

Responsibilities:

Teaching responsibilities may include such courses as Introduction to Family Therapy, Life Span Development, Cultural Contexts of Counseling, Advanced Treatment and Psychopharmacology in Mental Health Counseling, Psychopathology & Mental Health Counseling, Assessment in Counseling, Research Design and Methods. Courses may also include those in the clinical sequence such as Counseling Relationships and Skills, Pre-Practicum, Counseling Practicum, and Internship as well as other courses that fit program needs and individual competencies. This position will also include student advisement, curriculum and program development, committee work, scholarly activity, service to the department, college, community and profession, active participation in all program activities including admissions, accreditation, community outreach, and facilitating and maintaining program integrity. The successful candidate may be asked to teach courses in a distance learning format.

Required Qualifications:

  • ABD or holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education or a related field if combined with a minimum of one full academic year teaching as a faculty member in a counselor education program prior to July 1, 2013. ABD will be considered for appointment at a lesser (qualified) rank and salary, upon proof that the applicant's defense of his/her dissertation will be scheduled within the first year of the appointment. A successful ABD applicant will receive promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor and a salary increment at the start of the semester following verification of the terminal degree completion. An ABD hire will be limited to a one-year appointment, subject to renewal for one year only (2 years maximum).
  • Clinical supervision experience
  • Experience in clinical counseling practice
  • Evidence of potential to establish and implement a scholarly research agenda
  • A demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff and administrators

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate from a CACREP-accredited program
  • Teaching and experience working with diverse cultural groups
  • Teaching and/or clinical experience working with children and/or substance abuse
  • Teaching experience in areas that reflect knowledge of the 8 CACREP core competency areas
  • Professional identity and commitment to counselor education (i.e., participation in ACA and/or its divisions)
  • New York State license eligible
  • At least three years of counseling experience within the past ten years
  • Evidence of collaboration with counseling practitioners within the community and professional organizations
