Job Description

 Job ID: 40481

Location: Chicago, Illinois

Department: MED-Neurological Surgery
Salary/Grade: REF/RF

The Department of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is seeking a Research Assistant Professor to join our team in the lab of Dr. Amy Heimberger to contribute to basic and translational studies in immunology and immunotherapies relevant to brain tumors. We are located on the Northwestern Downtown Campus in the Chicago Streeterville neighborhood. This campus has state-of-the-art core facilities. The laboratory focuses on translational immune therapeutic strategies for central nervous system (CNS) tumors that has included a wide variety of strategies including peptide vaccines, immune modulatory aptamers, a small molecule inhibitor of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) with blood brain barrier penetration, adoptive T cell immunotherapy, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR T cells) and STING agonists. There is a robust interface with pharmaceutical companies that includes testing unique pipeline preclinical agents to devising immune monitoring strategies for window-of-opportunity clinical trials. Although the laboratory is well known for its discoveries of unique glioma-mediated mechanisms of immune suppression, current work is focused on understanding the immune interactions that occur in CNS malignancies and how these might be response biomarkers to immunotherapy.

The Research Assistant Professor will be expected to: work in a collaborative environment including overseeing development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for immunotherapy clinical trials, conduct independent bench research; analyze, interpret and present data; prepare manuscripts and build a publication record including submissions to leading neuro-oncology and cancer immunology journals; supervise rotating undergraduate, graduate and medical students, visiting residents and postdoctoral fellows; apply for internal and/or extramural funding; and attend national meetings that will help to build an international reputation.

This is a competitive opportunity in an expanding and highly collaborative multidisciplinary research environment. Northwestern offers outstanding infrastructure and thriving research community. Interested applicants must submit a current curriculum vitae with publications listed, a cover letter containing a short summary of research experience and aspirations, and names and contact information for at least three professional references. Salary is commensurate with experience. Must be able to start employment no later than July 1, 2021.
