Job Description

 At the Institute of Molecular Biosciences at the Natural Science Faculty, the University of Graz is seeking to appoint a : Professor of Biochemistry

(40 hours per week; selection procedure in accordance with Section 98 of the Universities Act (UG); permanent employment according to the Salaried Employees Act (AngG); expected starting date October 1st 2022)


The professorship is dedicated to the area of molecular and cellular biochemistry, with a focus on the (patho)physiology of energy and lipid metabolism in animal models (preferably in mice). The professorship is thematically and organisationally embedded in the area Biochemistry 2 at the Institute for Molecular Biosciences (IMB). The appointed professor is expected to establish and lead an independent research group that is to be primarily sustained by external funding. The job holder’s research profile should match, complement and expand the research activities in the field of Molecular Biosciences at the IMB and in Graz (e.g. SFB Lipid Hydrolysis, doctoral program Molecular Metabolism).  

An active participation within the university's Field of Excellence “BioHealth,” as well as in the inter-university research networks NAWI Graz and BioTechMed-Graz, is expected. Furthermore, the job holder is expected to collaborate with the future Austrian Academy of Sciences Institute CORI (Institute of Experimental and Computational Metabolism). A strong commitment to teaching is also expected through the development and implementation of university courses and the supervision of master and doctoral theses.  


Preferred and Required Qualifications

Employment requirements:

  • Austrian or equivalent foreign higher education degree corresponding with the position (doctorate/PhD)
  • Habilitation or equivalent qualification in a field matching the profile of the position to be filled
  • Outstanding academic qualifications in research and teaching in the relevant discipline and for the profile of the professorship (commensurate with stage of academic career)
  • Success in attracting subject-specific project grants, particularly where competitively awarded third-party funds are concerned
  • Skills in higher education didactics and online teaching
  • Skills in the supervision and guidance of early career researchers
  • Professional experience abroad during academic career
  • Management and leadership experience
  • Gender mainstreaming skills
  • Excellent command of English and experience with scientific publishing in English
