Basic Function:
The Director of Faculty Development and Inclusive Excellence leads the development, management and implementation of faculty development at California Lutheran University. This leadership includes coordinating faculty development programs, contributing to new faculty orientation, organizing the adjunct faculty retreat, and advising faculty on the best practices related to inclusive excellence and other mid-21st century pedagogies. As part of this work, the incumbent will responsible for envisioning, co-creating with colleagues, and delivering a comprehensive faculty development program. This program will support faculty in the areas of teaching, learning, research, diversity, equity and inclusion. At Cal Lutheran, DEI initiatives recognize “diversity” in all of its forms. While a racial and ethnic emphasis is critical, diversity of thought and ideology is also a hallmark of liberal arts and science institutions like California Lutheran. Additionally, the Director of Faculty Development and Inclusive Excellence will assist with planning the fall and winter faculty retreats.

This position reports to the Associate Provost for Educational Effectiveness and works collaboratively and closely with the Director of Digital Learning and the University's Chief Diversity Officer.

Representative Duties:

  • Responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing a range of programs that support the professional development of individual faculty and support the implementation of California Lutheran University institution-wide initiatives and administrative policies related to faculty. E
  • Partner with the University’s Chief Diversity officer and other colleagues to foster a campus-wide culture of diversity that is shaped by the Lutheran values of grace, generosity, and inclusivity. The incumbent will champion these values among faculty and help create a system of faculty accountability reflective of these values. E.
  • Collaborate with college/school deans and faculty to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives are a part of curricular and professional development opportunities. E.
  • Serve as a mentor to the junior level professors to help them towards their tenure goal. Support faculty in relation to research, publication, grant/proposal writing and collaboration with peers, from both within and outside of California Lutheran University. E
  • Cultivate a deep knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues, and best practices in higher education and instruction with particular focus on development of effective methods of assessment of teaching and student learning. E
  • Collaborate extensively with Digital Learning staff regarding faculty needs that impact digital learning content development and processes. E
  • Collaborate with the Provost and Deans in the assessment of faculty and leadership development needs and oversees the design, implementation, and assessment of comprehensive programming. E
  • Work with the Provost, Associate Provost for Educational Effectiveness, Deans, and faculty committees on faculty development and inclusion activities. E
  • Develop a program for mentoring and supporting new faculty during their first two years at California Lutheran University. E
  • Coordinate and support faculty across career stages, for both tenured and adjunct faculty with a focus on continuous improvement. E
  • Serve on, and collaborate with, campus-wide committees as needed. E
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. or Doctoral degree with at least five years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
This position requires a doctoral degree. Candidates should have a minimum five years of experience in higher education with credentials and a record of teaching, scholarship, and service commensurate with those of faculty members holding the rank of associate or full professor at the time of appointment at California Lutheran University. Superior communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction, pedagogy, culturally sensitive curriculum, mentoring and curriculum design and development. The ideal candidate will demonstrate cross cultural competencies and highly supportive of and committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
