Job Description

Position Summary:

The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will participate in planning and implementing digital projects. The ideal candidate will work well with diverse stakeholders, be able to manage complex workflows, and participate in the creation of digital projects that have both immediate appeal and lasting significance.

The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will also work with cataloging staff to apply MARC metadata for eResources such as eBooks and streaming videos, as well as traditional library material such as books and non-print resources. In both MARC and non-MARC environments, the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will explore new technologies in metadata applications and metadata schema adaptation; develop standards, policies, and procedures; train library staff to create and apply metadata; and manage projects.

This is a 12-month tenure track Assistant Professor position reporting to the Head of Content Organization and Management but will work in close collaboration with other library units. The position supervises and directs the work of three staff members. The cataloging and metadata librarian will be involved in ongoing technical services and digital projects and will also be expected to participate in the development of new digital projects. The position will also have responsibility for cataloging traditional library materials that support all programs at the university.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in Library Science or equivalent, from an ALA accredited school is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of one or more of the following metadata standards: Dublin Core, HTML, XML, MODS, markup languages etc. Knowledge of RDA, MARC, LCSH and LC classification, and OCLC.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of integrated library systems such as Innovative Interface's Sierra system.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include experience with applying metadata standards to describe digital collections; experience with collection management systems such as CONTENTdm; experience cataloging traditional library materials; supervisory experience; experience with archives and archival practice; experience with EAD; experience with institutional repositories; experience with MarcEdit; knowledge of emerging metadata standards, such as linked data, RDF and ontologies as well as emerging library applications (e.g., BIBFRAME) and name identifier systems (e.g., ORCID, ISNI).
