The Massachusetts College of Art and Design seeks applications to establish a temporary full-time faculty database. The College has majors in the following disciplines: Animation, Architectural Design, Art Education, Fashion Design, Film/Video, Painting, Printmaking, Ceramics, Glass, Fibers, Metals, Sculpture, Communication Design, History of Art, Illustration, Industrial Design, Photography, Studio for Interrelated Media, as well as a Studio Foundation and Liberal Arts Departments. 

A temporary full-time faculty member at MassArt is responsible for teaching in discipline related areas in which he/she has specific training and/or competence as evaluated by the Department Chair and the Provost. This includes planning, organizing and delivering course material and content, assessing student learning and engaging with students. All full-time faculty are also responsible for student advising, committee assignments, office hours, departmental meetings and attend university functions. 

Summary of Duties

Prepares and delivers instruction to students in assigned modalities as per the schedule and course contract using a variety of teaching methods and strategies. Designs and implements engaging classes and instructional material that demonstrate real-world applications of concepts discussed/studied. Provides feedback on students' progress, including evaluation of student mastery of course and program outcomes using school's key assignments, as required.

Prepares and submits required documentation (to College and to students) complying with policies and procedures including but not limited to: disability accommodations, syllabus and textbook submissions, attendance, grades, training, course evaluations, in-seat time, learning outcomes assessments, learning management system, email and technology, faculty evaluation, etc. 

Evaluates and selects text and instructional materials and prepares course materials and lesson plans. Is available for student consultation 3 hours per week on two different days. Notifies Department Chair of student situations/issues (i.e. academic integrity). Uses College provided tools and resources to offer feedback to students in matters related to academic success in a timely manner and to respond to the department and division. All official email communications between the faculty and students and/or the College must be conducted through MassArt's email server. Maintains and disseminates current information pertaining to services available to students throughout the College. Maintains professional development/growth according to personal needs and requirements for certification (if applicable).

Pay Rates
Massachusetts College of Art and Design is a state university and as such is subject to a collective bargaining agreement between the Board of Higher Education and the Massachusetts State College Association. The average starting salary for a full-time Assistant Professor with three years full-time teaching experience in a two or four year accredited college is $60,000.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Inclination and capacity to work collectively and individually in a student centered program with a mix of students who have a variety of needs and diverse approaches to artmaking.
  • Innovative approaches to connecting seeing and making to thinking and feeling.
  • Ability to teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced studios and courses in painting and drawing.
  • Experience with a variety traditional and contemporary painting and drawing materials, processes, and techniques.
  • Broad and deep knowledge of a variety cultural, perceptual and conceptual painting and drawing practices.
  • Master of Fine Arts degree required and College teaching experience preferred.
  • An active creative practice evidenced by a strong or emerging exhibition record.

Commitment to stay current and continually improve knowledge and understanding of the discipline. Commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring students. Knowledge and understanding of adult learner principles and respect for students as well as genuine interest in their learning. Ability to design learning activities to achieve determined learning outcomes. Ability to develop and implement diverse teaching and learning for different learning styles and to respond to the needs of learners from a variety of educational backgrounds in a multicultural environment. Ability to use formative and summative assessment measures to enhance learning. 

Skill in the use of personal computers and general office software. Ability to effectively communicate interpersonally orally, and in writing. Good organizational skills and interpersonal relationship skills with students and colleagues.
