JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Penn State Harrisburg (PSH), a comprehensive college of The Pennsylvania State University, one of the largest and most widely-recognized institutions of higher education in the nation, invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor position in its Sociology Program, with a start date of Fall 2021. A doctorate in sociology or a related area is required. Primary responsibilities will include teaching three courses per semester, maintaining an active research agenda, and service to the program, division, school, and university. Course releases are provided in the first two years to help the successful candidate pursue a program of research.
Expertise in race and ethnic studies is preferred, with an emphasis on the intersection of gender, race, and class. An understanding of race/ethnicity in global context is desirable. Other desirable areas include social movements and social change, sociological theory, migration and immigration, social inequality, and family diversity. The ideal candidate will possess a strong desire to help recruit, mentor, and retain students.
Preference will be given to candidates with a philosophy of scholarship oriented toward issues of social justice. Consistent with the mission of the University and the Sociology Program, the ideal candidate for this position should be a teacher-scholar who is a good departmental citizen and demonstrates a commitment to the principles of diversity, inclusion, and social justice. An active program of research with potential for external funding is expected.
