SMU seeks an exceptional academic leader to serve as the next Associate Dean for Academic Affairs within the Simmons School of Education & Human Development. Reporting to and working with the Dean, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will advance the quality and reputation of the academic programs within the school. The successful candidate will be an established scholar, teacher, and leader in a field of study of the school appropriate to the rank of full professor (with tenure) and with a proven commitment in proactively supporting efforts towards equity and inclusion. Associate professors who would be eligible for promotion to full are encouraged to apply.
The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will have demonstrated experience providing strategic, inspiring, and consensus-building leadership to an academic unit. The Associate Dean works to advance the quality and integrity of academic programs, implementing processes and procedures to support accreditation, overseeing educator preparation and certification, and leading faculty professional development. Further, the Associate Dean provides leadership and oversight to academic affairs matters including the curriculum committee, budgeting, course scheduling, new course and program development, and supporting the West Dallas STEM School initiative.
About the Simmons School of Education and Human Development
The Simmons School was founded in 2005 and is ranked among the top 25 private education schools in the United States. The school has undergraduate and graduate program across five academic departments, including Applied Physiology and Wellness, Counseling and Dispute Resolution, Education Policy and Leadership, Graduate Liberal Studies, and Teaching and Learning. Comprised of two state-of-the-art academic buildings, the Simmons School has over 80,000 sq. feet of office and classroom spaces, applied physiology labs, and a 21st century teacher development studio to advance the development of pre-service and in-service teachers. The Simmons School promotes excellence by engaging in and disseminating research, securing significant external grants and contracts, preparing exemplary professionals, and collaborating with other schools on campus.
Preferred qualifications include: (a) experience developing and/or sustaining collaborative partnerships and interdisciplinary initiatives; (b) leadership experience within higher education, such as serving in administrative positions such as department chair, program director, center director, or leading a large funded project; (d) history of obtaining external funding for research and (e) demonstrated mentorship of doctoral students and junior faculty.
