POSITION: Assistant Professor in Scenic Design (Tenure Track)
EFFECTIVE DATE: July 1, 2021
Northwestern State University (NSU) seeks applications for a twelve-month, tenure track, Assistant Professor in Scenic Design beginning July 1, 2021. NSU, a NAST accredited Theatre program, offers a BS in Theatre with Concentrations in Stage Design/Technology, Performance/Directing, Musical Theatre, and a BFA in Dance. The successful candidate will teach the following courses for all required theatre majors; Concepts of Design, Drafting for Theatre (hand and Vectorworks), Survey of Period Styles, Scenic Design and Scenic Rendering. The candidate will also teach the following elective courses on a rotating basis; Scenic Painting, Props Crafts, Special Problems in Design/Technology and Summer Theatre Works. The position assists the Technical Director in the supervision of the construction of scenic elements for the theatre's productions and the day to day operations of the theatre scene/paint shop and production spaces. Strong interpersonal communication skills, collaboration, and mentoring skills are required. Candidate will be required to advise students and serve on departmental and university committees. Candidate trains/teaches student crews in scenic painting and props making, supervise theatre/dance program student work calls, event/production set up and strikes. Candidate will design and build sets for productions as part of the NSU mainstage production season, as well as mentoring student designers throughout the production process.
Additional duties may be assigned by the Theatre/Dance Department Head.
A terminal degree in theatre and the ability to work with diverse student populations and entry level students is required.
Preferred: M.F.A. in Scenic Design, experience in Design and Construction, and previous university teaching experience.
RANK AND SALARY: Rank is at the Assistant Professor level and salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
