Non-tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level, with the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Texas A&M University-Kingsville. This is a 12-month research-focused position that will address how environmental and genetic factors influence expression of antler phenotypes in cervids. The results will contribute to our understanding of natural and anthropogenic selection, the design of harvest plans, and ultimately the sustainable management of natural resources. Main duties will be to conduct parentage and quantitative genetic analyses as part of a long-term experiment on populations of wild white-tailed deer. Successful applicant will build pedigree records based on parentage and relatedness among individuals and use the information to estimate heritability of antler traits, breeding values for antler traits, and quantify temporary and permanent environmental effects on antler phenotypes. Responsibilities:
- Conduct data analyses, including parentage and relatedness, and estimate components of phenotypic variance to satisfy research objectives
- Organize and maintain data sets of genetic and phenotypic information and ensure appropriate backup
- Communicate results to the scientific community in the form of journal articles and presentations at scientific meetings Communicate results to sponsor and the public in the form of progress reports and popular articles
- Participate in the intellectual community of the institute, may include assistance with undergraduate research, guest lectures, pre-submission review of manuscripts, collaboration with institute scientists, and so on.
Ph.D. in wildlife science, animal science, ecology, or related field from an accredited university. Applicants must have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work independently and as a productive member of a team.
Preference to applicants with:
- Quantitative skills, experience with large data sets
- Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals
- Background or interest in large mammal ecology or analysis of quantitative traits
$60,000 plus benefits (medical package has a 60-day waiting period). Starting date:

: Prefer onsite, willing to consider remote work for an outstanding candidate. Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) is located in Kingsville, a city of about 25,000 in southern coastal Texas. Kingsville is surrounded by the historic King Ranch and is about 40 miles south of Corpus Christi, near Baffin Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. TAMUK serves about 9,000 students. The Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute is a privately endowed research unit embedded within the university (https://www.ckwri.tamuk.edu/
