Job Description

The Department of English at Dalhousie University invites applications for a Limited Term (50%) appointment to teach 1 section per term of a new 1000-level Writing Requirement course, Reading Literature and Science, and to develop and oversee a series of supports for international students’ success. The position will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will be tenable for a 2-year term (1 July 2021 to 30 June 2023). This position is part of a pilot project funded through Dalhousie’s International Student Support Taskforce (ISST).

The successful candidate will:
× Teach 2 sections (1 in each of Fall and Winter terms) of a new 1000-level English course, “Reading – Literature and Science.”
× Develop a series of tutorials to complement the new course, and training and managing tutorial leaders. These tutorials will include writing and language instruction specifically for international students.
× Liaise with the ISST coordinator, the Writing Centre, the International Student Centre, and other relevant bodies to develop and manage in-course and extra-curricular International Student Supports (these may include, but are not limited to, peer mentorship, dedicated Writing Center and/or CLT tutorials, and cultural events involving both international and domestic students). The Department of English will support the successful candidate in these efforts.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must also hold a PhD in English or a cognate discipline by the date of the appointment. Experience teaching at the university level, both in-person and electronically, is required; preference will be given to candidates with research or teaching experience in the field of science and literature. Preference will also be given to candidates with experience developing writing supports for introductory courses and/or with experience developing writing support for students who have English as an additional language. Knowledge of social media—including, e.g., Weibo and WeChat—will be an asset. This position is subject to budgetary approval.
