Under the general supervision of the Administrator, in collaboration with the Dean of Counseling, the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) Counselor's responsibilities include individual and group counseling; instruction of personal development courses; plan educational activities designed to enhance personal/social/emotional well-being of students; evaluation of assessments; orientation of new students; collaboration and liaison to Department of Rehabilitation Counselors; recruitment and liaison to local High Schools and Resource Teachers; collaboration with various units on campus such as general counseling, student health center, tutoring center to ensure efficiency of services provided to students and implementation of innovative approaches to better serve students. The SAS Counselor will also be assigned to work in the Veteran Resources Center with our veteran student population to provide specialized academic, vocational/career and personal counseling services. This position may require assignments in the evenings and/or weekends and/or at off campus locations including online counseling.Duties and Responsibilities:
• Responsible for guidance and counseling functions of the assigned program.
• Assist with students’ career exploration and program selection, adjustments to college and personal development.
• Provide students with information regarding resources, opportunities and assistance available to them on the college and in the community including procedures for enrollment, assessment, financial aid and academic progress.
• Ensure student populations are engaged in a guided pathways framework, including completion of comprehensive educational plans.
• Actively engage in technological tools designed to assist the students and institution in moving students toward goal completion.
• Teach Personal Development courses, as assigned, in accordance with post-secondary level established course outlines.
• Develop curriculum and contribute to the Program Review process.
• Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
• Develop and implement a variety of effective counseling and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles.
• Serve as a resource for faculty in dealing with individual student problems; refer students to appropriate campus and community resources as needed.
• Engage in activities that enhance rapport with local high school, Department of Rehabilitation, industry partners, and/or four-year institutions.
• Organize New Student Orientation, Time Management, Organizational Skills, and Stress Management workshops.
• Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports), including mandated reports focusing on Title 5 regulations.
• Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of curriculum as well as assess student learning outcomes at the course and program levels.
• Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means
• Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in shared governance and campus life activities.
• Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
• Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the United Faculty of Ohlone (faculty bargaining unit) contract, and as assigned at the Fremont and Newark campuses, and/or other designated locations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.Desirable Qualifications:
• Experience counseling students about community college options, including certificates, associates degrees and/or transferring to four-year institutions.
• Two years’ experience in counseling disabled students in higher education.
• Demonstrated knowledge of counseling approaches for students to compensate for educational limitations posed by specific disabilities.
• Evidence of knowledge of state and federal guidelines regarding academic accommodations as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
• Demonstrated experience and ability to interpret, articulate and implement a variety of regulations, policies and procedures, concerning community college disabled students’ program and services.
• Knowledge and experience of interpreting IEP’s, medical, psychological and rehabilitation reports.
• Experience developing/coordinating workshops and events.
• Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, including experience with course management systems (i.e. Blackboard, Canvas, etc.)
• Experience in working with culturally diverse student populations (teaching or other situations in a leadership role).
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
• Ability to work successfully in a team environment.Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling or Master’s degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, or a Bachelor’s degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of fulltime experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:
(A) Counseling for students with disabilities; or
(B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities
