Assistant Professor in Infectious Diseases
The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology in the School of Natural Sciences at UC Merced invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department with a specialization in Infectious Diseases. Outstanding scholars working on BSL-3 human and animal pathogens and/or select agents who are focusing on understanding the pathogenesis of infectious diseases and/or the host response to infectious diseases are particularly encouraged to apply. Scholars are expected to establish and maintain creative research programs that complement the existing multi-faculty specialization in infectious diseases at UC Merced and are encouraged to utilize the campus' new state-of-the-art BSL-3/ABSL-3 research facility. Research programs of particular interest include the study of host-pathogen interactions and emerging infectious diseases caused by viral, fungal, bacterial or protozoan pathogens.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or a related field is required.
Significant independent research experience is highly desirable. The candidate is expected to establish a strong independent research program and secure extramural funding.
The applicant is expected to contribute to the teaching mission of UC Merced by offering lecture and/or laboratory courses in microbiology, microbial pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions, or related topics at the upper and lower division undergraduate level (majors and non-majors) as well as graduate courses in their area of expertise.
The applicant must be able to guide undergraduate and graduate student research, advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and provide support for student retention and degree completion.
