Professor of Practice - Trial and Litigation including Civil Procedure I and II, Deposition Practice, and advanced legal writing courses

The University of Washington School of Law seeks applications for a part- time, non-tenure track Professor of Practice to teach doctrinal courses in the areas of trial and litigation including Civil Procedure I and II, Deposition Practice, and advanced legal writing courses with  intersectionality with other areas of law, including criminal law, constitutional law and administrative law on a 9-month basis. This position will start September 16, 2021 and will be a minimum of 50% FTE with the ability to fluctuate to accommodate increased teaching needs and the successful candidate's other professional obligations.  

The Professor of Practice will co-direct the Appellate Advocacy Clinic and expand the clinic's strategic litigation and advocacy docket. The clinic is part of a program administered by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that allows third-year law students to serve as counsel of record, brief, and argue an appeal on behalf of a party that would otherwise proceed pro se. The clinic offers a unique opportunity to argue an actual case before the Ninth Circuit. 

In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Experiential Education the successful candidate is expected to develop rigorous criteria and rubrics to measure the quality of student work in skills-based litigation courses in which students must be practice ready by graduation. Supervising and mentoring clinical students on cases while teaching students a broad range of lawyering skills including research and writing, legal and policy analysis, problem-solving, and oral advocacy is expected. Additionally, the successful candidate will coach moot court competitions and review advanced writing assignments, journal papers, clerkship applications and other trial- and litigation-related projects.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

All UW faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

 Qualifications

• JD or foreign equivalent and a minimum of five years in substantial litigation practice, including experience chairing trials in federal court and arguing appeals in federal court and the Ninth Circuit in immigration and/or §1983 litigation. 
• The candidate must be admitted to the Washington State bar no later than May 2021.
• Minimum of three years teaching Civil Procedure or related courses 
• Clinical teaching experience is preferred.
