With a focus on advancing knowledge through research and discovery, The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) closed out fiscal year 2020 with its highest total research expenditure numbers in its 51-year history. In FY 2020, UTSA's total research expenditures increased to $134 million. This is a significant milestone for UTSA as it propels toward National Research University Fund (NRUF) eligibility and recognition as a Carnegie R1 high-intensive research institution*. To accelerate towards our destination of Research Excellence by expanding our research portfolio while providing excellent customer service, the Office of the Vice President for Research, Economic Development and Knowledge Enterprise (VPREDKE) is seeking an innovative, dynamic, out-of-the-box thinking, strategic leader for the position of Director of the Research Service Center (RSC) that serves College of Engineering and College of Sciences at UTSA. This proven leader will oversee the largest research portfolio that includes grants and contracts from federal, state, and local agencies, including National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), US Department of Energy (DOE), US Department of Defense (DOD), and US Department of Homeland Security (DHS). As UTSA continues to grow and moves rapidly towards becoming a premier research institution, the successful candidate is expected to have a proven track record of years of experience working with the top research agencies.
Due to efficiency and effectiveness requirements, REDKE has recently reorganized the Research Service Centers, which are under REDKE's Office of Sponsored Project Administration (OSPA), to focus only on pre-award functions, while a separate Post-Award Administration unit has been established under REDKE ‘s Office of Research Finance and Operations. While the main focus of an RSC is on pre-award functions, we are seeking a director who has experience across the spectrum of both pre-award and post-award functions to work in collaboration with the Director of Post-Award Administration in order to provide seamless services to our research community.
While the current position is specifically targeted to fill in the Director position for the Sciences and Engineering RSC, we strongly encourage candidates with essential level of experience in non-STEM areas to apply, as well.

Hours per Week
40 hours per week. Additional hours may be needed as business dictates.
Purpose of Position
Provide leadership for all pre-award research administration activities in the Research Service Center. Responsible for the management, development, review and oversight of all grants and contracts and pre-award activities of their Research Service Center.

At present, this role is a UTSA telecommuting position, and the candidate selected for this position will be required to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Telecommuters may be required to work on campus at times; travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility. It is expected that this position will return to campus in the future. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.
