About our Department
The Department of Art and Performance Studies combines two programs at Xavier and offers degrees in Art Education, Art and Performance Studies. The performance studies major and minor were launched in Fall 2020 through the efforts of interdisciplinary faculty teaching and working in performance. The program houses the Performance Studies Laboratory (PSL), an arts and humanities-based interdisciplinary lab which views performance as an object to be studied, a creative method of scholarly inquiry and representation, and a tool for community engagement. Working in an interdisciplinary context, the lab uses a performance-based lens for experiential learning and research that culminates with sharing creative work with public audiences. It is equipped with a wide range of mobile equipment, including stage, sound, light and video design materials. The PSL engages students and faculty in research-based performance projects, practice-based workshops, and performance festivals, all involving multiple levels of community engagement and outreach. On average each year, the lab engages approximately 150 undergraduates in learning and research activities and reaches audiences of 500, including community members.
