Job Description

The Department of Art and Performance Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applications for a tenure-track position in Performance Studies at the assistant professor level for the 2021-2022 academic year beginning August 2021. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Performance Studies or in an interdisciplinary arts or humanities discipline with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in performance studies.. The ideal candidate will approach the study and practice of performance from a critical/cultural perspective with a specialization in any of the following teaching areas: gender and sexuality; race and ethnicity; social movements, immigration; or environmental studies. We are particularly interested in teacher-scholar-artists who can develop cross-listed curriculum in Performance Studies and Women’s Studies. Candidates whose research and teaching interests engage those two areas while considering BIPOC communities in national, international or transnational contexts are of particular interest. Those having strong interdisciplinary arts backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply, as we seek to grow our collaborations with departmental colleagues in visual art. We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to recruitment efforts and our existing strengths in community-based artistic partnerships, mentoring of undergraduate creative scholarship, and social justice. Duties: • Teach a 4/4 load in performance studies courses required for the major, minor and University core curriculum. Responsibilities will include a teaching rotation of an introductory public speaking course. Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, remote, and/or any combination thereof. • Develop cross-listed curriculum in Performance Studies and Women’s Studies • Develop and sustain a performance-based research practice • Supervise and mentor undergraduate students in creative scholarship projects (performances, performance festivals, etc.) • Departmental service that contributes to a new major and minor in Performance Studies (additional service to university and community) About our Department The Department of Art and Performance Studies combines two programs at Xavier and offers degrees in Art Education, Art and Performance Studies. The performance studies major and minor were launched in Fall 2020 through the efforts of interdisciplinary faculty teaching and working in performance. The program houses the Performance Studies Laboratory (PSL), an arts and humanities-based interdisciplinary lab which views performance as an object to be studied, a creative method of scholarly inquiry and representation, and a tool for community engagement. Working in an interdisciplinary context, the lab uses a performance-based lens for experiential learning and research that culminates with sharing creative work with public audiences. It is equipped with a wide range of mobile equipment, including stage, sound, light and video design materials. The PSL engages students and faculty in research-based performance projects, practice-based workshops, and performance festivals, all involving multiple levels of community engagement and outreach. On average each year, the lab engages approximately 150 undergraduates in learning and research activities and reaches audiences of 500, including community members.
