The Department of Sociology at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applicants for a tenure-track entry-level/early career tenure-track position in sociology at the assistant professor level beginning August 2021. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Sociology, with a background in Health Disparities and Health Equity.
The department is particularly interested in candidates who study the systemic mechanisms and human outcomes of health disparities as well as the underlying social inequalities that cause these disparities. The candidates should be prepared to contribute to the “Health, Medicine and Society” program concentration. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching and research and be able to support HBCU students through advising as well as mentorship. The successful candidate will teach four courses each semester, including interdisciplinary teaching opportunities in related programs such as Xavier’s Core Curriculum, African American and Diaspora Studies, and Women’s Studies. Summer school teaching opportunities are also available, although not required for this position. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, minimizing barriers and increasing equity and completion rates between members of different demographic groups.
• Teach undergraduate courses each year, including but not limited to, Introduction to Sociology and Health Disparities. Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, remote, and/or any combination thereof.
• Advise and mentor undergraduate students
• Engage in research
• Contribute to the Department’s “Health, Medicine and Society” concentration
• Participate in service activities for the department, university, and community.
