The Faculty of Arts, School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Calgary invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Piano. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2021. Applicants will be active and versatile performers with extensive performing experience, including chamber music, who are committed to teaching applied piano, chamber music, and new music and collaborative work. They will contribute to the diverse activities of the Music program and School by engaging with, for example, improvisation, new technologies, interdisciplinary exploration or community-based initiatives.
The successful candidate will establish and maintain an active and externally funded research program, teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the area of their specialization in addition to other courses in the Music program, contribute to the graduate program, participate in the affairs of the School and faculty, and engage with the wider community. We invite candidates who understand the changing landscape and challenges faced by today’s practicing musicians and are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity, equity and inclusion through their teaching, research, creative activity, and service.
The successful candidate must display evidence of excellence in research, creative activity and teaching. Candidates may demonstrate excellence in research and creative activity through peer-reviewed performances or publications, as well as demonstrated potential for establishing a strong record of research productivity and successfully securing grants. Evidence of excellence in teaching should be demonstrated via a statement of teaching philosophy, strong teaching evaluations, and an exceptional record of commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching, student supervision, and mentorship. Where appropriate, the candidate should provide evidence of community engagement in their research and teaching. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to service within a university setting and the wider community.
The School of Creative and Performing Arts is a community of practicing creators, performers and scholars who, with expert technical and administrative support, are dedicated to the education of artists and critical thinkers in the context of a University devoted to the formation of intelligent and engaged world citizens. In addition to a deep engagement with the foundation of their chosen discipline, students have the opportunity to enrich their education with inter-arts experiences from among the other disciplines in the School. The Music program has over 140 majors with approximately 1200 additional non-majors enrolled in courses or participating in ensembles. An active piano program is an essential component of our first-class music program. The impact of this position will be felt throughout the program, with participation in masterclasses, chamber music, performance juries, courses related to repertoire, recruitment and retention of students, community outreach, participation in recitals and concerts, and instruction and supervision of graduate students.
