The School of Nursing (SON) at the University of Southern Maine invites applications for anticipated Part-Time Faculty openings for the Spring 2021 semester. These positions involve teaching clinical nursing to pre-licensure nursing students in the baccalaureate nursing program. Course meeting dates, times, and lengths may vary depending on the particular lab or clinical. Broadly the Spring 2021 semester begins on January 25th and ends on April 30th, 2021. There will also potentially be required training/orientation meeting(s) prior to the start of the semester as relevant to the course(s) the individual is hired to teach.
Faculty responsibilities include orienting, teaching, supervising, grading, and evaluating pre-licensure nursing students. Clinical sections will have up to 8 students per clinical depending on location, lab/simulation sections may have 8-16 students per lab. Larger labs over 12 students are typically team-taught with two faculty members. Due to COVID safety measures, many of the labs will be blended, meeting on campus for some week, and live-online using Zoom for other weeks.
These teaching opportunities could involve any of the following lab or clinical courses, depending on SON needs, and we will work with those hired to find the best teaching match(es) to their skill, experience, interest, and availability. NUR 301 - Health Assessment Lab: 1-credit. course meetings are 2 hours per week for 14 weeks at the Portland campus & live online in Zoom.
NUR 307 - Nursing Fundamentals Lab: 2-credits, course meetings are for 4 hours per week for 14 weeks at the Portland campus & live online in Zoom.
NUR 313 - Intermediate Nursing Skills/Simulation Lab med/surg: 1-credit, course meetings are 4 hours a week for the second 7 weeks of the semester at the Portland campus and live online in Zoom. Team-taught with two faculty members.
NUR 420 - Pediatric & Maternity Skills/Simulation Lab: 2.5-credit, course meetings are 4 hours a week for 14 weeks at the Portland campus & live online in Zoom. Team-taught with two faculty members. This lab includes both hands-on learning and virtual simulation.
NUR 413 - Advanced Nursing Skills/Simulation Lab acute care: 1 credit, course meetings are 4 hours a week for the first 7 weeks of the semester at the Portland campus & live online in Zoom. Team-taught with two faculty members.
NUR 325 - Junior Medical/Surgical Clinical: 4-credits, typically one day per week for 14 weeks, possible clinical locations may include MMC, SMHC, CMMC, Mid Coast, Mercy, Maine General, or St. Mary’s.
NUR 331 - Mental Health Nursing Clinical - 2 credits, typically one day per week for 7 weeks (some first half of the semester, some second half of the semester), possible clinical locations may include Spring Harbor, SMHC, St. Mary’s or Maine General.
NUR 422 - Reproductive Health Nursing Clinical: 1.5 -credits, typically one day per week for 5 weeks, possible clinical locations may include MMC, SMHC, Mid Coast, Mercy, or Maine General.
NUR 428 - Child Health Nursing Clinical 1.5-credits, typically one day per week for 5 weeks, possible clinical locations may include MMC, or a community/school-based placement group.
NUR 425 - Senior Acute Care Medical/Surgical Clinical: 2-credits, typically one day per week for the first 7 weeks of the semester, possible clinical locations may include MMC, SMHC, CMMC, Mid Coast, Mercy, or St. Mary’s.
NUR 490 - Senior Capstone: 1-3 credits (depending on student enrollment numbers), typically one day per week for 14 weeks, meeting on the Portland campus, a student research project focused.

Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior college teaching experience. Required: BSN or BS in Nursing from an accredited program, current active Maine RN license or relevant Nursing compact license, able to meet employment criteria including background check, immunizations, BLS/CPR certification, and current TB. Expertise in entry-level nursing skills, and recent practice in clinical nursing.
Preferred: Masters or Doctorate in Nursing and college-level teaching expertise.
