Department/College Description
The internationally-recognized School of Film and Animation (SOFA) offers BFA and MFA degrees in film production with emphasis in either Animation or Live-Action as well as a BS degree in Motion Picture Science. SOFA provides a creative community where students have the opportunity to discover their unique talents and expressive potential, while at the same time developing the skills needed to fulfill any creative or technical role in the film and animation industry. SOFA enrollment is typically 350 undergraduate and 45 graduate students.

RIT's College of Art and Design is the university's creative hub where art, design, science, and technology intersect in its five schools: Art, Design, American Crafts, Film and Animation, and Photographic Arts and Sciences. The range of innovative programs offers students a panoramic perspective from creating fine art using centuries-old methods to pushing the boundaries of digital creativity. Detailed Job Description
The School of Film and Animation in the College of Art and Design at Rochester Institute of Technology is seeking an active artist dedicated to the education of filmmakers/animators. The candidate should demonstrate substantial aptitude in animation production using 3D software. Courses will involve teaching undergraduate and graduate students the aesthetics and techniques of animation production, modeling, rigging, and lighting & texturing. An extensive knowledge of animation filmmaking processes and current and emerging technologies in the animation art form is important. The successful candidate is committed to teaching animation production and is capable of inspiring a critical and inventive environment in the classroom.

The candidate should have demonstrable experience in pre-production and production techniques and processes, story structure, and commercial or independent animation production. Proficiency in some of the following areas is expected: 3D character animation, modeling, lighting, texturing, animation design in traditional media and emerging technology. The candidate is expected to cover a full teaching load consisting of courses in filmmaking, animation technique, and creative production practices.

Applicants with broad-based expertise in animation and filmmaking practices and excellent writing and communication skills are encouraged to apply. Preferred knowledge of current applications relative to animation production, including: Maya, Adobe After Effects, Z-Brush, Substance Painter and the full Adobe Creative Suite.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching five courses per year ranging from lower-division foundations to upper-division and graduate levels.
  • Working with animation and film production faculty on program and curricular development.
  • Maintaining a high level of expertise in current animation trends.
  • Advising students for capstone/thesis films and providing professional mentorship.
  • Engaging in scholarly activities/research within the arts, design, and media disciplines.
  • University, college and departmental service and community outreach.

  • Earned MFA (equivalent experience considered in extraordinary circumstances)
  • Proficiency with Maya or other industry standard 3D software
  • Body of past work
  • Prior teaching or mentorship experience
  • Experience in 3D character animation, modeling, rigging, lighting, texturing, compositing, scripting
  • Professional experience
