Chair, Department of Neurobiology
Galveston, TX

For over 130 years, University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) has stood with Texas – training today's and tomorrow's health care workforce; working to better understand and treat illness and injury; providing care; and innovating new ways to improve health. With 1,000+ faculty in 50 departments serving 800 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate and professional students, UTMB Health is a $3B academic system comprising six hospitals, close to 100 outpatient clinics, and schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, Public and Population Health, and Graduate Biomedical Sciences.

The Department of Neurobiology aims to advance the frontiers of basic and translational research in cellular, molecular, and interdisciplinary neuroscience, and to provide innovative training in these disciplines for graduate, medical, and post-doctoral trainees. The Neuroscience Graduate Program at UTMB, the first PhD program in neuroscience in Texas, prepares graduates to become researchers and/or teachers in the field of neuroscience in academic institutions, industry, biotechnology, or government.

Reporting to the SVP and Dean, John Sealy School of Medicine, and working closely with system leaders, the next Chair of the Department of Neurobiology will foster research collaborations across UTMB. The Chair will guide the growth and development of the Department's highly respected education and research programs, taking full advantage of UTMB's extraordinary faculty, trainees, and staff. In addition to directing the inter-disciplinary programs that lead to the development and retention of high-impact researchers, the Chair will nurture a collaborative training environment with mentorship that stimulates intellectual creativity and instils passion for developing ground-breaking basic and translational research.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will be nationally and internationally recognized in the field, a PhD or MD/PhD and associate professor or professor, with sterling academic and administrative leadership credentials and a record of securing sustainable extramural funding. The next Chair will understand the global landscape of neurobiology and will strategically strengthen and position the Department for innovation, success, and excellence. With deep understanding of a complex academic healthcare environment, along with a commitment to interdisciplinary and interinstitutional collaboration, the next Chair will build relationships at all levels of the organization. This is an opportunity for an aspirational leader to position the Department of Neurobiology at UTMB as a national and international leader in the field.
