The College of Arts and Letters at James Madison University invites applications for a first-of-its-kind initiative: a cohort hire of six outstanding, tenure-track faculty working collaboratively in several interconnected areas, which include social justice, minority cultures and politics, racial equity, non-Western thought, and critical race studies. Scholars hired into this cohort will be appointed in six of the College’s ten departments: Sociology and Anthropology; History; Political Science; Justice Studies; Philosophy and Religion; and Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication. We are looking for excellent applicants within particular disciplines, but also scholars and teachers eager to work across them, both within the College and beyond. Arriving as a cohort with broadly shared interests, successful candidates will enhance existing strengths in Latinx, African American, African diaspora, ethnic and global studies, and intercultural communication. The hiring of this cohort aligns with JMU’s commitment to increasing faculty, student, and curricular diversity. It also supports the anti-racist agenda of Academic Affairs.
The College of Arts and Letters provides a solid foundation for this cohort initiative. With 270 full-time faculty, 3500 majors, and supportive alumni networks and boards, we are a strong, vibrant college. We are deeply committed to student and faculty diversity; we excel in global education and community engagement; and we have a demonstrated record of inclusivity and belonging. The College is home to the renowned Furious Flower Center Poetry Center (focusing on Black poetry and poetics); the program in African, African American, and Diaspora Studies; the program in Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies; and many scholars across disciplines who teach and conduct research on the issues of concern in this cohort hire.
Applicants will have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline or field, and a strong research and teaching portfolio. We will also consider ABDs at the advanced dissertation stage who have particularly compelling records. We are especially interested in candidates who can demonstrate a clear commitment to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Applications will be submitted electronically, and must include, at a minimum, a CV (with the names of at least three referees) and letter of application setting forth research and teaching interests as well as ideas for collaboration with other members of the cohort. Applicants should also be prepared to describe their commitment to the diversity of the classroom, program, and university.
