Job Description:

The Director of Clinical Education Development and Strategic Initiatives is a senior leadership position responsible for advancing and enhancing clinical education within the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program. The role focuses on expanding clinical training opportunities through strategic partnerships, innovative models, and operational excellence. The Director ensures alignment with accreditation standards, promotes workforce readiness, and supports community engagement through collaborative, cross-campus initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Site Development

  • Serve as the primary liaison with Core Clinical Sites (Site Coordinators, Directors of Medical Education, Regional Assistant Deans)
  • Develop and sustain strategic partnerships to grow and enhance clinical education offerings
  • Identify opportunities for new site development and expansion of existing partnerships
  • Ensure alignment of clinical education initiatives with institutional priorities and accreditation standards



Program Oversight and Compliance

  • Oversee third- and fourth-year clerkships, including the administration, quality improvement, and evaluation of student experiences across multiple training sites
  • Lead the annual Clerkship Match process in collaboration with Clinical Education leadership
  • Monitor compliance with Committee on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) standards and integrate updates into clinical education practices.
  • Prepare and verify required COCA and AACOM reports; ensure timely submission and accuracy
  • Secure annual letters of commitment from affiliated Core Sites to ensure adequate clerkship capacity



Preceptor and Site Engagement

  • Recruit, train, and evaluate clinical preceptors, with a focus on the Kansas City region
  • Coordinate and lead annual Core Site visits, including agendas, presentations, and written reports
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to address student concerns related to clinical experiences
  • Facilitate Core Site and preceptor recognition and appreciation efforts



Administrative and Financial Operations

  • As department Cost Center Manager, participate in annual budget planning with Clinical Education and Finance leadership
  • Review and approve clerkship-related payments in coordination with appropriate staff
  • Assist in maintaining and updating Clinical Education Guidelines and the Preceptor Manual
  • Contribute to departmental goals through collaboration, special project leadership, and cross-coverage during peak times



Institutional Engagement

  • Represent the Clinical Education department on institutional committees as assigned
  • Serve as Executive Proctor for NBME examinations, as designated by the Executive Dean
  • Participate in weekly leadership meetings and support cross-campus initiatives and strategic planning



Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Knowledge typically obtained through Associate or Bachelor's degree in a related area
  • Experience in higher education, particularly medical education or clinical operations, strongly preferred



Skills & Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of third- and fourth-year medical school curricula and clinical clerkship operations
  • Familiarity with COCA standards and accreditation compliance
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, solve problems, and work proactively in a fast-paced environment
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel); ability to adapt to institutional software systems
  • Flexibility, sound judgment, and discretion in handling confidential matters


Physical and Travel Requirements

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computers, phones, and file systems
  • Capable of sitting and working at a computer for extended periods (4+ hours per day)
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly to clinical sites and between campuses, including:
    • Extended periods of driving or sitting (2-6 hours).
    • Navigating diverse healthcare and academic environments.
  • Flexibility to accommodate variable travel demands and schedules during peak clinical education periods
