Job Description

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University seeks applications for a 12-month tenure-track, Assistant or Associate Professor in Cardiology. This position will be housed in the Department of Clinical Sciences located on the Veterinary Health Campus of Colorado State University. The Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery Service at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital provides care to dogs, cats, horses, and other animals with heart, vascular, and lung disease. The Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery Service is devoted to the care of animals with heart disease, the discovery of underlying causes of cardiac dysfunction, and the development of new imaging techniques and treatments for heart disease in animals and humans. Our state-of-the-art facilities for the medical and surgical care of cardiac patients include the Pocket Foundation Hybrid Cardiac Interventional Suite (a 1400sqft cardiac catheterization laboratory with fusion imaging, rotational angiography, advanced dose reduction and real-time radiation monitoring), the Lucy and Friends CT Suite (housing a 2x196 slice dual-source Siemen SOMATOM Force cardiac CT scanner able to freeze cardiac motion), 2 Philips Epiq cardiac ultrasound systems with 3D transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography probes, and a dedicated echocardiographic image server with multi-client analysis and reporting capabilities. The Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery Service has 3 residents-in-training, a fellow in veterinary interventional cardiology, a doctoral student in cardiac imaging, a veterinary sonographer with 30+ years of cardiac imaging experience, a registered veterinary technician, a dedicated radiation technologist certified in both cardiac cath and CT, and a client liaison. A cardiothoracic surgeon is an integral member of the Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery Service and we run an active open heart program, drawing from a national referral base for complex surgical and interventional therapies in animals. The tenure track appointment assistant/associate professor in cardiology will have a 25-40% service appointment, a 25-45% research commitment and a 25-40% teaching commitment dependent on rank. It is the intent that this individual will support both clinical and didactic teaching in the DVM program in the area of cardiology. The position also supports client service and revenue generation in the VTH. The individual hired into this position is expected to have an 18-22-week commitment to clinical teaching and service. Clinical training of fellows, residents, DVM students, and interns is a requirement of this position as is providing state-of-the-art care for animals. During the non-clinical time, the faculty member will share didactic teaching and service/outreach including: continuing education for local, regional, national, and international veterinary groups, providing phone and/or email consultation for veterinarians in Colorado and other states, and developing and participating in professional continuing education for veterinarians and participating in appropriate university, college, department, hospital or professional committee work. The remaining time is available for research/scholarly activity and includes collaborative research with other departmental faculty and participation in veterinary clinical trials. Scholarly activity will include professional and lay publications in the discipline of cardiology. Candidates will be evaluated for the assistant professor level as well as the associate professor level based upon meeting the minimum and preferred qualifications.
