Position Description

Seattle University School of Law is seeking to hire a 0.5 FTE Visiting Professor to teach in its new Tribal Practice Clinic, beginning July 1, 2025.

The Clinic is one component of a partnership between the Law School and Skagit Legal Aid designed to increase access to holistic legal services for individuals with matters before the Swinomish and Makah Tribal Courts. The Clinic will provide advice in areas such as family law, housing, and hunting and fishing violations, in addition to other needs identified by the community. The Clinic will also assist with estate planning and some Bureau of Indian Affairs-related issues. The Clinic seeks a Visiting Professor with specialized legal knowledge of Indigenous Peoples Law (federal Indian law and tribal law) and an understanding of the unique sovereign status of Tribal Nations.

The Clinic will enroll its first students in the Fall 2025 semester, which begins in late August, and then will run again in the Spring 2026 semester. The Visiting Professor's appointment will begin on July 1, 2025, and run through the academic year, concluding on June 30, 2026. There may be an opportunity for renewal for another year.

The Visiting Professor will:

Collaborate with representatives of Skagit Legal Aid and members of the law school faculty to design the clinic;

Develop and teach a weekly seminar that prepares students to effectively represent clients in the areas in which the clinic will be working;

Meet regularly with students to discuss their work on clinic cases; and

Attend (remotely and in-person) client meetings, court sessions, and other events essential to the clinic's work.

Qualifications

Required:

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited ABA Institution (or the equivalent from a foreign law school plus an LLM or SJD from an ABA-accredited law school)
• 3 years of experience as a licensed attorney
• Knowledge and experience relevant to practice in Tribal courts;
• Current license to practice in Washington

Preferred:

• Experience as a supervisor or teacher, in legal or other settings
• Experience working with tribal communities
• Experience working with individuals of limited financial means

Compensation at a Glance:

Salary Range: $50,000

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate's gender or any other protected status.
