Position Announcement

The Technical Director (a full-time exempt position) is responsible for the overall operation and project management of the scene shop, including drafting construction drawings, calendaring, budgeting, accounting, construction and painting of scenic elements, properties management, and oversight of scene shop employees. This position collaborates closely with directors and designers to reach artistic goals with allotted resources. Once load-in begins, this position coordinates all aspects of scenic load-in and rigging/overhead preparations with other departments: lighting, sound, projection, etc, for maximum efficiency and safety. The Technical Director will work in various venues, including Bastian Black Box, Smith Proscenium Theatre, BB Jones Dance Theatre, Concert Hall, and Outdoor Amphitheatre at the Sundance Mountain Resort.
This position oversees the full-time Scene Shop Supervisor, the lab coordinator for the Stagecraft and Production labs in the Theatre Department.

With the Operations Director, the Technical Director will plan long-range strategies for operations. This position will oversee safety standards and directly supervise professional as well as student staff. The Technical Director will attend required rehearsals, tech/dress rehearsals, and production meetings or delegate an attendee as appropriate.

Summary of Responsibilities

• Provides cost estimates for materials and labor for the execution of scenic design and support for theatre, dance, music, and art departments and the Sundance Summer Theatre Partnership. Directs the purchasing of all scenic materials. Produces technical and construction drawings. With the Operations Director, the Technical Director, helps to plan long-range strategies for operations and Scene Shop facilities. Ensures safety standards in operations and equipment. Manages professional staff and students (as second level reports). Attends specified rehearsals, tech/dress rehearsals, and production meetings. Advises on technical needs, costs, and use of equipment to support events/performances in various venues on and off campus, including the four performance venues of The Noorda Center for the Performing Arts as well as the Sundance Summer Musical. Manages the operation, maintenance, and safeguards the technical assets of the performance spaces. Monitors the condition of theatrical equipment including rigging and arranges for repair and replacement. Works within budgetary constraints. Advises on, requests, and executes the purchase of equipment for the scene shop and performance spaces and makes recommendations to the Operations Director regarding capital purchases of technical and theatrical equipment.
• Oversees the supervision and training of lab students, student employees, and staff in the construction, set up, and strike of theatrical scenery meeting production deadlines. May, train lab students, student employees and staff in safe work practices in the shops and in venues. Manages the training of staff and students in scenic carpentry, welding, rigging, and safe use of all power tools. Produces a calendar for builds, load-ins and strikes of all performance events. Supports technical theatre majors by coordinating opportunities in design and technical direction. Mentors staff and students in the production of technical and construction drawings. Provides training and safety procedures for the scene shop and performance spaces.
• Manages the scene shop and props for the SOA. Manages equipment inventory of scene shop, venues, stock scenery, and props. Performs consistent inspections of venues and shops to maintain a safe working environment. Purchases new, or repairs equipment. Aids the mentorship of staff and students in the production of technical and construction drawings. Manages the load-in, maintenance and operation of scenic elements and theatrical equipment to support theatre, dance, music and other events; assists guest artists in technical matters. Keeps up to date with scenic construction practices, organizational methods, and improvements in technical production. Coordinates use of SOA vehicles.
• As necessary, supports productions with hands-on projects including (but not limited to) special effects, video and projections, and stage management. This position runs crews, assists with stage work, and is responsible for purchasing, sourcing and researching materials and techniques. Maintains a safe work environment at all times. Address safety hazards with appropriate personnel promptly. Produces technical and construction drawings. Provides cost estimates for materials and labor for the execution of scenic design and support for theatre, dance, music, and art departments. Directs the purchasing of all scenic materials. Attends design and production meetings supporting theatre, dance, art, and music. Attends technical rehearsals.
• Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors in Technical Direction, or closely related field. Extensive (4 -8 years) supervisory experience in theater operations, Shop management, including theater equipment setup, operation, and maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Technical Direction, or closely related field. Extensive (3 -5 years) supervisory experience in theater operations, shop management, including theater equipment design, setup, operation, and maintenance.

• Advanced working knowledge of drafting conventions for theatre.
• Knowledge of current theatrical construction techniques and rigging.
