Primary Responsibilities:

The Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre and Commercial Dance beginning August 1, 2025. The candidate will join an energetic 25-person theatre and dance faculty and staff, with a load equivalent to 12 credit hours per semester in the areas of hip hop, musical theatre jazz, Broadway, tap, and other forms and styles appropriate to the musical theatre and dance repertoire. The candidate will also serve as one of the primary choreographers for one or two productions each academic year (musicals or dance concert), mentor musical theatre and dance student choreographers, assist in conservatory recruitment activities in both musical theatre and dance, as well as advise musical theatre and dance majors and serve on conservatory and university committees as assigned. The candidate will also participate in academic department, college, and university student recruitment and retention activities.

The musical theatre program is ranked in the top 30 programs nationally, and the conservatory maintains approximately 275 overall BFA/BA majors and operates in the outstanding River Campus facilities as part of the Holland College of Arts and Media. The university is accredited by NAST.

Required Qualifications


  • MFA in Dance; MFA in Musical Theatre or Acting; or Masters with Significant Professional Experience. (Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government certified university)
  • Experience as a professional dancer and choreographer in commercial dance (TV, film, athletic, stadium, videos) and musical theatre;
  • Experience teaching in a college or university program as a graduate assistant, instructor, assistant professor, or above;
  • Proven record of successful teaching in musical theatre jazz and Broadway techniques;
  • Proven record of successfully teaching advanced levels of hip-hop and street dance;
  • Ability to teach tap;
  • Ability to teach film/TV;
  • Ability to develop athletic dance;
  • Ability to help students prepare for professional auditions, including online websites, reels, resumes, and so on;
  • Proven record of significant professional experience as a choreographer of large-scale musicals, dance concerts, athletic events, and so on;
  • Ability to build athletic and/or stadium dance classes;
  • Ability to teach musical theatre history, dance history, and other areas of performance and dance as needed;
  • Evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated desire to recruit and retain musical theatre and dance majors; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community.
