We're seeking a highly motivated Portfolio Manager Research to contribute to the Action Lab team. Every day you'll make a difference in the lives of others by working closely and collaboratively with the Dreamscape Learn Project team and other stakeholders to plan, manage, organize, and execute against project requirements; you will also identify and acquire the necessary resources and coordinate efforts to ensure timely delivery of project outcomes in accordance with sponsoring source's expectations and Action Lab operational guidelines. As a researcher in this role, you will guide efforts toward actionable outcomes grounded in data and analysis of our project study, which focuses on Dreamscape Learn.
Action Lab is a data-driven, research-focused service organization that supports ASU and EdPlus initiatives by equipping leaders with the insights and analyses they need to make informed, evidence-based decisions. Action Lab drives transformational change in education through data and research, focusing on learner behaviors and the factors that drive success. Our goal is to improve access and achievement while bolstering the development of quality education for all learners.
Dreamscape Learn is a university initiative and project that makes use of immersive storytelling, virtual reality, and scalable technologies to engage learners.
Essential Duties:
• Co-plans, develops, implements, and manages a project team by supporting the completion of tasks, communication of work plans, and work requirement identification of sub-assignments.
• Works closely and collaboratively with key stakeholders to define project scope, research strategy and outcomes; identify critical resource expertise; and target appropriate internal and/or external sources to ensure optimal outcome(s).
• Drafts and shares scopes-of-work in the required template for each report in the portfolio.
• Establishes and continually monitors/manages project expectations with team; assigns tasks and identifies issues for resolution to ensure optimal team effectiveness. Prepares and maintains all project status reports and schedules; tracks milestones/deliverables, critical paths and dependencies; re-sets expectations as needed in consideration of project progress/outcomes.
• Facilitates a weekly portfolio meeting to ensure the preceding duties.
• Responds to all inquiries regarding project status; prepares and responds to all regulatory reporting/filings (IRB) to ensure compliance while keeping the leads aware of workflows and requests.
• Manages, coaches, and supervises all project team members, both internal and contracted, to ensure optimal outcomes; builds, develops, and maintains relationships vital to project success.
• Works collaboratively with Principal Investigator(s) to engage leadership, associated scientists and other research-related staff to define and identify all required project infrastructure, including space, build/reconfiguration of laboratory facilities, equipment, technology, and instrumentation to ensure timely availability for successful launch and ongoing project operations.
• Co-prepares all post-project reports, budget allocations and summaries/filings to ensure timely dissemination of information to all interested parties and compliance with Action Lab standards.
• Strong participation in strategic decisions regarding type of projects, expertise development (grow or buy), and future direction of project efforts integrated with long-term institutional objectives/goals.
• Fosters cooperative matrix work teams by developing mutually beneficial relationships and identifying issues, concerns, and interests. Leads initiatives to develop solutions and processes to meet needs; applies knowledge of strategic planning, forecasting, and critical thinking.
• Develops, prepares, maintains, and forecasts multiple complex project-level plans with an understanding of budgeting.
• Tracks and supports the saving of all data and research-related assets in the appropriate drive spaces.
• Maintains a real-time representation of all portfolio work in Jira, complete with a description with the appropriate template, assignees, due dates, and links to relevant documents.
• Drafts and uploads research protocols and requisite documentation to ASU's Institutional Review Board (IRB).
• Maintains a real-time representation of all portfolio research and instrumentation with ASU's IRB.
• Addresses emergent needs across the portfolio.
• Supports and executes qualitative research methods, such as class observations, interviews, and related coding exercises.
• Leverages AI to execute work at speed, is comfortable with tools like ChatGPT, and has an ease of prompt engineering.
• Assumes or coordinates other duties or projects as assigned or directed.
This is not a fully remote position. Must be able to reliably commute to the SkySong location in Scottsdale AZ
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field including two (2) years managerial experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications:
• Evidence of a bachelor's degree or higher in a related field.
• CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management): Equivalent of 1 year of project management experience.
• PMP (Project Management Professional): Equivalent of 2 years of project management experience.
• PgMP (Program Management Professional): Equivalent of 4 years of project management experience.
• Proven participation in the development of three or more research protocols for an Institutional Review Board (IRB).
• Experienced with mixed-methods research design across multiple projects but leads in qualitative research methods.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with quantitative researchers.
• Comfortable conducting qualitative research in interview and observation settings.
• Has published academic papers visible in Scopus, Google Scholar, or similar as either a co-author or lead author, demonstrating the ability to publish in a field of study.
Salary & Benefits:
$90,000 - $108,000 per year; DOE
Target salary is $100,000 per year
This is a grant-funded position to support the Action Lab and Dreamscape Learn projects. The initial grant length is two years with extension options for a permanent, full-time role in Action Lab.
