Associate Vice President for Inclusive Excellence and Mission Integration

Job Description Summary:

The Associate Vice President for Inclusive Excellence and Mission Integration (IEMI) works collaboratively with the president and senior leadership to ensure a mission-oriented culture, by leading efforts and creating opportunities to define, assess, and promote ULV’s core values (Ethical Reasoning, Diversity and Inclusivity, Lifelong Learning, Civic and Community Engagement). The successful candidate will help to implement plans, programs, and activities that educate and motivate the college community to create a campus climate where diversity of thought and lived experience is respected and valued. The IEMI office enhances the experience of students, faculty, and staff by providing leadership and oversight to offices and roles focused on cultivating cultural engagement, fostering a sense of belonging, challenging systems of privilege and oppression, and building intercultural competency. The incumbent will be a proactive and visible leader, providing guidance and inspiring change.

The Associate Vice President for Inclusive Excellence and Mission Integration reports direct to the Provost, with a dotted line reporting relationship to the President.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from accredited higher education institution
  • 5 years of demonstrated leadership experience with generating a positive environment of inclusive excellence for students, faculty, and staff. Prior experience in similar roles with track record of increased responsibilities
  • A record of exemplary personal and professional integrity and demonstrated ability to work effectively individually and as a member of a team in a collaborative, collegial way (Minimum of 5 years). Ability to work with and maintain a balanced focus on students, faculty and staff matters concerning inclusive excellence.
  • 5 years of demonstrated experience with communicating a vision fostering equity, diversity, and inclusiveness (in a higher education environment preferred)
  • 5 years of experience and understanding of equal opportunity, affirmative action, and knowledge of applicable federal and California laws, policies, and procedures related to Title IV, Title IX, Americans with Disabilities, and similar others
  • 3 years of demonstrated experience working with program assessment and data-informed decision making
  • Specific understanding of how multiple statuses (e.g., race, gender, class, sexuality, nationality, religion, ability status, etc.) intersect to affect the experiences of staff, faculty and students.
  • Ability to operationalize definitions of inclusive excellence for the whole campus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with senior leaders to build individual capacity and commitment towards organizational change.
  • Anticipatory, solution-oriented thinking around broad cultural and societal concerns.
  • Experience leading swift, effective responses to on-campus bias-motivated incidents.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A terminal degree (Ph.D, J.D., Ed.D, etc) in an area related to DEI, social justice, or leadership and organizational effectiveness.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and effectiveness of working on inclusive excellence issues within a complex higher education intuitional setting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ULV’s core values of Ethical Reasoning, Diversity and Inclusivity, Lifelong Learning, and Civic and Community Engagement.


Specific Duties:

  • Working collaboratively with the president, members of the President’s Executive Cabinet and other campus leaders, act as a strategic integrator and influencer for University mission and inclusive excellence, contributing to informed deliberations, shared accountability, and effective decision-making and action.

Percentage of Time: 15%

  • Develop and lead equity-centered, mission-focused and values-based initiatives and celebrations which foster shared understanding of, support for, and action to advance the distinctive mission of University of La Verne and its status as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Minority Serving Institution (MSI). Drive efforts to revise or remove embedded institutional policies, procedures, and norms that contribute to structural barriers creating differential opportunities to access and success for students, faculty, and staff who belong to marginalized and underserved groups.

Percentage of Time: 15%

  • Establish strategic direction, assessment and ongoing analysis for the realization of inclusive excellence and mission integration. Work with Institutional Research to conduct periodic assessments to illuminate strengths, challenges, and gaps in the advancement of an equitable, inclusive, and mission-focused campus climate.

Percentage of Time: 15%

  • Work with faculty, staff, students, and appropriate institutional governance structures and administrative units to promote inclusive excellence and mission integration in teaching and learning across the curriculum and co-curriculum. Work within a regional and national community of scholars to advocate for inclusive excellence in all academic fields (e.g., research, creativity, and scholarship focused on diversity and inclusion, and civic and community engagement).

Percentage of Time: 15%

  • Supervise and manage the following offices and roles: Title IX, Civic and Community Engagement, Multicultural Affairs, Religious and Spiritual Life, Randall Lewis Center for Well-Being and Research, and First Gen/HIPSS (Title III grant). Support these offices in developing materials, resources, and programmatic opportunities for the ongoing incorporation of ULV’s Core Values across all aspects of the campus culture.

Percentage of Time: 15%



  • Pursue external funding opportunities to support mission-oriented inclusive excellence programs and initiatives on campus, including those specifically available to universities with designations as an HSI and MSI.

  • Receive Social Justice concerns from faculty, staff, and students, and route the concerns to appropriate offices for follow up. Collaborate with General Counsel on Title IX matters and with the Office of Human Resources on EEO matters.

Percentage of Time: 10%

  • Liaise with campus special interest groups (e.g., Faculty Diversity Committee, Chicano/a Latino/a Staff Faculty Association, Black Faculty and Staff Association). Connect with national organizations (e.g. NADOHE, Excelencia, HACU, NCORE) to share La Verne’s best practices and gain knowledge about other community’s best practices.

Percentage of Time: 5%

  • Collaborate with the Office of Human Resources to promote and ensure hiring for mission and inclusive excellence and provide strategic direction for ongoing orientation, formation, and evaluation of employees.

Maximum:
$130,913
Minimum: $109,094

The offered wage or salary is only one aspect of an employee’s total compensation
