Summary

The Curator is responsible for all aspects of the administrative and physical operation of the Fine Arts Center Galleries and its collections. Duties include but are not limited to exhibition curation and planning, gallery budgeting, establishment of policies and procedures, student worker supervision, marketing and public engagement, grant writing, and private fundraising. The Curator will work closely with the School of Art Director and the Galleries Committee (composed of faculty, students and community members).

Essential Functions

Exhibition curation/program development
Promote excellence, diversity, accessibility, and civic engagement through presentation of professional, student, and community exhibitions and related programming/activities. Publication/dissemination of exhibition catalogs. Organization of visiting artists/scholars public lectures.

Gallery operations
Recruit, train and supervise student employees, interns, grad assistants and volunteers. Prepare contracts and loan agreements. Responsible for documentation and record keeping as well as adherence to industry standards in shipping, handling and secure presentation of artwork.

Outreach/public relations
Plan and develop collaborative activities with other campus art/design units -- the College of Musical Arts, the Department of Theatre/Film, the Creative Writing Program, the School of the Built Environment (Architecture) and the Interior Design program. Also, regional non-profits (including galleries and museums), and business/corporate partnerships. Develop content to promote and publicize gallery activities through advertising, printed and electronic materials, and social media. Maintain current and consistent promotions across media platforms.

Budget management
Budget planning and oversight including pursuit of external resources through grants and private fund raising.

Event planning
plan and promote receptions and events. Oversee facility repairs and upgrades. Collaborate with faculty in development and facilitation of divisional shows. Develop and codify gallery guidelines and processes.

Curriculum development
Work with faculty to develop courses and curricula focused on curation and gallery operation.

Collection supervision and maintenance
Manage Fine Arts Center collections in keeping with established professional standards. Provide accessibility for teaching and scholarly research through cataloging and management of collection databases.

Minimum Qualifications


The following Degree is required:

  • Master's Degree. Degree must be conferred at time of application.

The following Degree is preferred:

  • Master's level degree in Art History, Museum Studies, Studio Art/Design, or a related discipline such as American Culture Studies or Ethnic Studies


The following Experience is required:

  • 3 years of previous experience with professional-level gallery operations including budget management.



Additional Information


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Record of achievement in exhibition curation and programming.
  • Demonstrated experience with marketing, communications, brand strategy, and social media promotions.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of best practices in collections care, exhibition design, research, and collections cataloging
