This position primarily performs its duties on the Kentfield Campus and occasional travel to the Indian Valley (Novato) campus may be required, so if not already residing within the Bay Area, the successful candidate must be willing to relocate.

Position Overview:
Under general supervision, provides comprehensive alternate media and assistive technology access services to support student access and academic success; serves as a liaison between faculty, students, and Student Accessibility Services to secure and translate instructional materials into alternate formats; work with students to assess accessibility needs, serves as resident expert on assistive technology resources available for students with disabilities; coordinates the delivery of services, software, and hardware to students and instructors; advises department on alternate media solutions in response to student needs through direct training and campus-wide education; and performs related duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
An Assistive Technology Access Specialist is distinguished from other instructional support classes in that the former performs highly technical and advanced functions in meeting accessibility needs of students, faculty and staff in compliance with requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and associated laws and regulations, specifically through the use of alternate media and assistive technology.

Essential Functions


The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

  • Conducts assessment of each referred student to best determine appropriate assistive technology, including alternate media formats, delivery mechanisms, equipment, software, and training needs of the student.
  • Consults with Student Accessibility Services Counselors on referred students with academic accommodation plans.
  • Coordinates accommodations with faculty, librarians, and other personnel to identify alternate media and assistive technology to meet course learning objectives, and to translate course material into other formats including quizzes and exams; provides captioning additions to videos in close consultation with instructors and instructional designer(s).
  • Collaborates closely with Information Technology, Distance Education, and Office of Instructional. Management to ensure course materials and web content meets accessibility standards and course review.
  • Researches new assistive technology resources, explores professional development opportunities to increase body of knowledge, and maintains broad understanding of the educational technology landscape; develops training materials for available resources, tools and equipment for public use; provides training to students, staff, and counselors on available services and various opportunities to reach students with access needs and/or disabilities.
  • Supports the Test Proctoring Center staff and student utilizing the center with embedded assistive technology supports including text-to-speech, speech-to-text, text enlargement tools, digital notepads, on-screen calculators.
  • Performs a wide range of technical and administrative duties to support department operations and programs including maintaining assigned webpages, digital files and records; prepares various reports; secures and inventories equipment; data management, spreadsheets, documents, computer programs and applications.
  • Serves as an active member and participant on committees, workgroups, and/or task forces related to distance education, universal design for learning, digital accessibility, and technology planning to advance the districts work toward broad-scale accessibility; serves as a resource to the College on Alternate Media and Assistive Technology accessibility issues and resources.

Other Duties:

  • Attends meetings as assigned.
  • Represents the College and/or department on internal and external committees, as directed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.



Requirements & Desirables

REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience:

  • Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be graduation from an associate degree program in special education, alternate media, adaptive technology or a related field, and at least two years of progressively responsible experience in adaptive computer technology, software and/or hardware; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • A demonstrated commitment to equity-minded practices in support of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, college staff, and community members.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:


Knowledge of:

  • Current adaptive technology, techniques, equipment, uses and applications.
  • Application and adaptation of media formats, including braille, e-Text, audio, large print and tactile graphics to meet the learning requirements of individual disabled students.
  • Specialized equipment and software to produce materials in alternate media formats.
  • The Americans with Disabilities Act, applicable Education Code and other local, state and federal laws, regulations and court decisions applicable to providing accommodations and support to students, faculty and staff with disabilities.
  • Principles and practice of customer service; oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer operations and related applications and software.
  • Safety policies and safe work practices applicable to the work being performed.


Skills and Abilities to:

  • Perform a variety of specialized duties involved in identifying and suggesting potential solutions for accessibility barriers; provide specialized and technical support and assistance; analyze and solve complex and difficult accessibility problems related to people, processes, and technology.
  • Install, program, configure and maintain assistive technology equipment, software, and devices.
  • Operate computers and peripheral equipment properly and efficiently; operate a variety of office equipment, and scanners to convert hardcopy materials into electronic formats.
  • Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines; work productively and cooperatively with others; work with and exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse racial, ethnic, disabled, sexual orientation, and cultural populations of community college students.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Evaluate and interpret documented student learning support needs and level of technology skills to provide the most appropriate alternate media and/or assistive technologies to meet the student's individual needs and preferences.
  • Provide seamless training on new technology/equipment to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Research and learn the use of equipment and tools; assess utility of tools.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and serve as resource on emerging information technology trends and development.
  • Engage students and faculty/staff to promote program and adaptive technologies.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Resolve conflict independently.
  • Observe safe work methods and practices according to guidelines and regulations.
  • Prepare clear, concise and comprehensive spreadsheets, correspondence, reports and other written materials.
  • Understand, interpret, explain and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures, laws, codes and ordinances.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Operate a computer, enterprise software, specialized alternate media equipment and software and other standard office equipment.
  • Organize and maintain specialized files.
  • Maintain confidentiality of District and student files and records.
  • Exercise sensitivity and diplomacy in dealing with complex and confidential student issues and situations.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:

  1. In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  2. Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
  3. California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  4. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District(MCCD)employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. NOTE: The College is closed on Fridays during the summer period, when the work schedule may change according to departmental needs.

SALARY INFORMATION
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Salary Range: CSEA 122
Starting Salary Range: $40.31 to $44.43 per hour (Step 1 to 3). Normal entering step is Step 1.

CLASSIFICATION CATEGORY & RETIREMENT PLAN
Employees in classifications represented by the California School Employees' Association (CSEA) Chapter 196 and are required to comply fully with the CSEA/Marin Community College District (MCCD) Collective Bargaining Agreement. General information regarding rights and responsibilities under the Agreement can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreements section of our Human Resources site. CSEA employees are also members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), to which the member contributes up to 8% of their reportable compensation on a monthly basis.


SELECTION PROCESS

  • Employee-only: $1,600/month
  • Employee plus one dependent: $2,300/month

Dental and Vision Insurance - Delta Dental and VSP vision plans for employee and dependents, with no cost to employees

Retirement through CalPERS - MCCD contributes 27.05% of employee's creditable earnings to CalPERS on a monthly basis (2024/2025). Vested after five (5) years. Mandatory employee contribution for 2024/2025 is 7% - 8%, depending on original date of membership and prior membership status.

Life Insurance - $50,000, with the option to purchase additional voluntary life insurance for the Lesser of 5x base annual salary or $500,000

Additional Retirement Savings Plans - Employees are also eligible to participate in a voluntary, tax-advantaged 403(b) or 457(b) retirement savings plan.
