Assistant or Associate Professor of Literacy Education

Minimum Qualifications
The Child Development, Literacy and Special Education Department in the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University seeks qualified candidates to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the Literacy Education Program.
We are seeking applicants who have expertise in teaching and an active research agenda to join our collaborative team. The successful applicant will be appointed to a full-time, nine-month position to begin August 2025 with the possibility of summer teaching.
Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Evidence of knowledge of and experience with teaching elementary literacy methods;
  • Evidence of knowledge of and experience with the science of reading;
  • Evidence of commitment to educational access and culturally sustaining pedagogies;
  • Evidence of or potential for university teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels in reading/literacy content;
  • Evidence of or potential for scholarship related to reading/literacy or related field;
  • Evidence of at least two years of teaching pK-6 reading/literacy teaching experience in educational settings (or documented equivalent); and
  • Doctorate in reading/literacy education or closely related field (Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire).



Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)
Expertise (in terms of teaching and/or research) in at least two of the following:

  • Inclusive, evidence-based approaches to elementary reading development, instruction, and assessment
  • Inclusive, evidence-based approaches to elementary writing development, instruction, and assessment
  • Teaching field-based and/or clinic-based pK-6 literacy methods courses
  • Literacy instruction across linguistically and culturally diverse educational areas

Description of the Department or Unit
The Reich College of Education offers a broad range of comprehensive degree programs: Baccalaureate, Masters, Specialist and Doctoral levels as well as programs leading to certification and licensure. The college seeks to provide a well-balanced program of classroom and clinical experiences while maintaining a cooperative, forward-thinking posture, with emphasis on excellence in teaching, learning, research, scholarship, and outreach. This position resides in the Department of Child Development, Literacy and Special Education which offers innovative programs focusing on all facets of child development, reading, writing, language, and specific areas of special education. The department is affiliated with the Anderson Reading Clinic, the Lucy Brock Child Development Lab, the Scholars with Diverse Abilities Program, and the Special Education Mathematics Clinics - Adapted and General Curriculum. The Literacy Education program prepares teachers to engage the reading/literacy needs of all students in their classes-especially striving readers and writers. Our courses are rooted in multidisciplinary research, pulling together established and emerging work across the fields of education, psychology, linguistics, sociology, and cognitive science, which work together to construct the science(s) of reading. We maintain a deep commitment to culturally sustaining literacy and pedagogies, ensuring literacy instruction is responsive across academic, linguistic, cultural, and socio-emotional domains.
Appalachian State University is a member of the sixteen-campus University of North Carolina. Located in Boone, North Carolina, the University enrolls over 20,000 students, primarily in Bachelors and Masters programs. Appalachian has a traditional residential campus and a variety of distance education programs. Additional information about the Department of Child Development, Literacy, and Special Education, the university, and the surrounding area is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, a region noted for its scenic beauty. We are near the Appalachian Trail, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and national and state parks.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The duties include teaching, research, and service. Specifically, faculty will:

  • Engage in work consistent with Appalachian State University's Strategic Plan 2022-2027.
  • Teach elementary education undergraduate courses with field-based practica at the Boone and Hickory campus sites and connected school-based sites;
  • Teach literacy education graduate courses at campus sites and online;
  • Teach, mentor, and collaborate with preservice teacher candidates, in-service teachers, and doctoral students;
  • Actively engage in scholarly work;
  • Actively engage with teachers and students in our laboratory school settings (Academy at Middle Fork; Lucy Brock Child Development Lab) and/or other field-based sites;
  • Maintain a visible presence on campus;
  • Engage in service to the program, department, college, university, and profession;
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the program, department, and university;
  • Serve on and chair doctoral committees;
  • Advise graduate students.
