International Student Advisor
Job Description Summary:
Reporting to the Director of the Office of International Services & Study Abroad (ISSA), the incumbent will be responsible for the legal, financial, academic, and interpersonal counseling for the University’s international student population. Additional responsibilities include SEVIS compliance and support for the development of the ISSA’s orientation and cocurricular program initiatives.
Additionally this position supports La Verne’s Study Abroad program. This includes advising students and faculty on study abroad opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors.
- Designated School Official Training.
- Title IX Certification.
- FERPA Certification.
- Designated Campus Security Authority (CSA).
- Knowledge of advisement principles and practices, experience with university admissions and registrar, and knowledge of Federal Regulations based on 8 CFR 214F.
- Knowledge of SEVIS.
- Experience with Engagement Programming and planning event logistics.
- Knowledge of student affairs theory and practices.
- Experience working in student affairs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience planning and implementing new student orientations and co-curricular events.
- Knowledge and understanding of student engagement practices.
Specific Duties:
- Provide legal, financial, academic, and interpersonal counseling for the University’s international student population in accordance with University academic and administrative policies and in compliance with the Code of Federal Regulations that govern the F, J, H, and B-1/B-2 Visa statuses
Percentage of Time: 20%
- Collect, assess, and process I-20 applications, Passport/Visa and financial documents necessary to issue Initial and Transfer I-20s for new students and process new and continuing I-20s in SEVIS
Percentage of Time: 20%
- Assist with the coordination of La Verne’s Study Abroad program. This includes advising students, staff, and faculty on study abroad opportunities. Help with the recruiting of students for study abroad programs and assure that sufficient study abroad opportunities are available for students.
Percentage of Time: 20%
- Determine student eligibility and process paperwork for transfers, OPT, CPT, Change of Status, Leave of Absence/Withdrawals, reinstatements, and Economic Hardship benefits with USCIS and SEVIS as determined by the Code of Federal Regulations and SEVP Protocols.
- Initiate and monitor SEVIS Help Desk Data Fix requests.
- Check SEVIS Alert section to ensure regular SEVIS record maintenance.
Percentage of Time: 10%
- Check course enrollment and full-time statuses of all continuing term and semester based students and register students in SEVIS in compliance with federal regulations.
Percentage of Time: 10%
- Assist with planning and implementation of new student orientations, up to 25 Transitional Education program modules and cultural events per academic year. Participate in the collection of data for the purposes of ongoing assessment
Percentage of Time: 10%
- Maintain Banner, OISE Share file spreadsheets, and communication data files to ensure 100% accuracy
- Participate in the collection of data for the purposes of ongoing assessment
Percentage of Time: 5%
- Compose verification letters for students seeking enrollment verification, military deferments, Social Security card, and Drivers License application.
- Function as Designated Campus Security Authority (CSA)
Percentage of Time: 5%
Salary Range
Maximum: $70,000
Minimum: $66,560
