Fletcher Jones Endowed Professor for Artificial Intelligence

Job Description Summary:

The Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering at the University of La Verne invites outstanding applicants to apply for the Fletcher Jones Endowed Chair in Computer Science – Artificial Intelligence (AI) – a full-time tenure-track or tenured position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor starting as early as the Fall 2024 semester. The University is looking for scholars exploring AI as discipline of Computer Science, the connections between AI and other disciplines, and pursuing research that address unique challenges in domains beyond computing, such as scientific machine learning, Robotics, cognitive neuroscience, explainable AI, sociotechnical systems, and human computer interactions.

The College of Arts and Science’s Fletcher Jones Endowed Chair is provided by the generosity and philanthropic support of the Fletcher Jones Foundation. Candidates must be committed to excellence in teaching, including a strong desire to establish research projects that provide valuable learning opportunities for undergraduates. The University of La Verne is in close proximity to a remarkably diverse array of ecological communities in the San Gabriel Mountains, Pacific Coast, and Mojave Desert that provide additional field research opportunities. Candidates must have a strong record of peer-reviewed publications and research funding.


Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science with a focus in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or related fields and academic credentials that merit the rank of Assistant or Associate professor. The preferred candidate will also have a history of scholarly research and publication, active participation in professional development as evidenced by presentations and publications, and display a readiness to work closely with a diverse student body and faculty colleagues through innovative pedagogy, research, and service initiatives. The University is looking for scholars exploring the connections between AI and other disciplines or pursuing research that address unique challenges in domains beyond computing, such as scientific machine learning, cognitive neuroscience, explainable AI, sociotechnical systems, and human computer interactions. Moreover, the University is seeking candidates with exemplary interpersonal and communication skills. Candidate will be able to relate to and communicate with diverse students, faculty, staff, and external communities.


Preferred Qualifications:

The university is seeking an AI professor with substantial experience leading curricular, co-curricular, and career experiences with diverse undergraduate students. The candidate will exhibit evidence of leadership in the discipline, including keynote speaker at national meetings, journal editor/reviewer, extensive publications in peer-reviewed, top tier journals, and well-established professional networks that will benefit the students. In addition, abilities or an interest in interdisciplinary initiatives within the Colleges is preferred. Two year related industrial experience is a plus. Two years college teaching experience is desirable. Previous curriculum development experience a plus. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in teaching, creating interdisciplinary courses across colleges, and program management, along with industrial experience in AI, Robotics, Machine learning, or Predictive modeling. The professor will be expected to conduct research and contribute to the growth of the field overall while engaging in academic advising, mentoring, and peer collaboration.

The offered wage or salary is only one aspect of an employee’s total compensation
