Course: POL103 | Politics of the World's Nations (4 Credits)
A survey of political systems that introduces students to fundamental concepts and their applications in many nations. The course examines public institutions (legislatures, executives, courts) and political processes (voting, policy-making).
Course: POL141 | Intro to American Politics (4 Credits)
A broad survey of American national politics. Political Science majors should take this course before taking any other course in politics.
Course: POL155 | Contemporary Global Politics (4 Credits)
This course provides an analysis of the dynamics of global politics and focuses on two general themes: 1) global conflict and cooperation and 2) the global political economy. Topics include state and non-state actors, the role of power and morality, the types and causes of war, foreign policy decision-making, just war tradition, humanitarian intervention, the democratic peace theory, global financial institutions, trade and international monetary policy, and the role of multinational corporations.
Course: POL302 | Institutions of Global Governance (4 Credits)
This course examines the mechanisms for creating and maintaining global "order." It examines the core institutions and philosophies that inform debates over global governance as well as the current challenges to global order posed by issues such as climate change, democratic recession, economic development, and human rights.
Course: POL304 | International Development (4 Credits)
This course offers a comparative study of the politics of development. It examines the theoretical underpinnings of the study of development politics, their translation into concrete policies throughout modern history and the ongoing challenges to global development faced by individual countries and the global community.
Course: POL336 | The American Presidency (4 Credits)
This course examines the origins, growth, and complexity of the American presidency. The constitutional role and historical developments of the Chief Executive will be considered in relationship to the meaning of democratic government, the separation of powers, and the expansion of public administration during the 20th century.
Qualifications: Graduate degree in discipline. Official transcripts due upon hire.
The College: The College of Arts and Sciences offers undergraduate programs through six departments - Communication, Criminal Justice and Sociology; Computational and Physical Sciences; English, Modern Languages and Philosophy; History, Political Sciences and Religious Studies; Life Sciences; and Visual and Performing Arts.
