About the Veterans Resource Center 
The Veterans Resource Center (VRC) at Golden West College is dedicated to supporting veterans and their dependents in their academic journey. We offer a variety of resources and services, including guidance on navigating the admissions and financial aid processes, connecting with academic support, and fostering a sense of community. Through individual advising, workshops, and events, the VRC empowers veterans to thrive at GWC and achieve their educational goals. The Student Success and Equity Specialist, Senior will coordinate events for veterans and oversee daily operations and activities in the VRC. 
 
Summary
The Student Success and Equity Program Specialist, Senior embodies and promotes the values of inclusion, diversity, and equity; collaborating with students and college staff to shape and develop programming that fosters a safe, supportive, and responsive environment especially for historically underrepresented students; aimed at increasing student engagement, retention, progress and completion.
 
Distinguishing Career Features
The Student Success & Equity Specialist, Senior is the specialized position providing decision support and work direction to classified, hourly staff and student workers in the day-to-day operations of the assigned program; provides outreach activities and additional coordination of program offerings to students. The Student Success & Equity Specialist is the first level position assisting with outreach and collaborative efforts to secondary education for promoting pathways to college and careers.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities 
Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:
  1. Provides some work direction in the day-to-day activities and operations of the Student Success and Equity Program staff that collaborate to provide targeted services for students.
  2. Advises, guides, and trains student leaders and organizations on resources available to students through the college’s Student Success and Equity Programs; coordinates and implements program promotion, evaluation, and assessments.
  3. Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with faculty and staff to develop programming that ensures student participation and creates a diverse, inclusive, and safe environment accessible to all.
  4. Assists with planning, forecasting, monitoring, and reconciliation of program budgets.
  5. Provides training, guidance, and support to student organizations; recruits and retains members; follows protocols, college and department policies and procedures; identifies access to campus and community resources for students.
  6. Evaluates current programs and assesses future needs; provides data and assessment reports as required that highlight program accomplishments, challenges and opportunities.
  7. Collects data and information to create, prepare, and analyze reports to assist the Student Success and Equity Programs in identifying gaps in service, enrollment trends and statistics, student issues related to specific stages of academic progress and needs of specially targeted student populations such as, but not limited to: Veterans, EOPS/Care, first generation students, etc.
  8. Coordinates program services, events, and special activities with other student functions and instructional support such as, but not limited to, educational planning, workshops, priority registration, and advising.
  9. Facilitates and organizes implementation of student services and support initiatives and tools to identify and provide outreach to students needing various levels of support to mitigate any potential ‘at-risk’ and/or retention issues.
  10. Works closely with Counseling and Assessment Divisions to refer students for academic skills assistance including tutoring, counseling, and/or career guidance. Assists students to connect with peers and work with support services such as counseling, financial aid, and targeted student resources.
  11. Serves as a liaison to student service organizations outside the college; may attend meetings and gatherings to promote the college and student recruitment and enrollment efforts.
  12. Identifies additional resources available throughout the community to enhance the student experience at the college; promotes those available resources to targeted student populations.
  13. Creates, edits, and maintains marketing or information materials for all available resources to provide to students; updates college webpage with available resources, keeping information current and relevant to today’s student populations.
  14. Researches other successful college student support programs to identify and apply best practices and events in support of student success and equity programs; provides recommendations to Director on potential opportunities for outreach or change to current policies and procedures.
  15. Fosters and maintains relationships with college and community partners that provide services to support student retention, benefit student health and well-being, and provides opportunities for academic and professional growth.
  16. Provides onboarding and peer support to student veterans through direct communication. Conducts needs assessments and provides access to resources and networking opportunities.
  17. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
  18. Required to abide all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.

 

Qualifications and Physical Demands

 

Knowledge and Skills 
  1. Requires working knowledge of the concepts and legislation applying to student success programs including orientation, assessment, enrollment, advising, and retention strategies.  
  2. Requires demonstrated knowledge of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  
  3. Requires basic knowledge of data-driven methods to identify students who may be at risk of not continuing.  
  4. Requires working knowledge of the transfer and occupational programs offered through higher education.  
  5. Requires working knowledge of enrollment policies and procedures, graduation, and certificate requirements.  
  6. Requires knowledge of mentoring and supporting learners from diverse backgrounds.  
  7. Requires knowledge of and skill at using personal computer-aided applications for office productivity, data management, and preparation of communications materials.  
  8. Requires sufficient math skills to read and understand basic statistical concepts and data relationships.  
  9. Requires sufficient knowledge of and skill at using English grammar for written communications.  
  10. Requires well-developed human relations skills to make presentations to student audiences, convey college life advantages, exercise patience, and facilitate discussions with students and faculty.  
  11. Requires knowledge of federal and state benefits for military affiliated students.

  5. Requires the ability to organize work to meet deadlines.  
  6. Requires the ability to interview and develop working relationships with students.  
  7. Requires the ability to apply motivational interviewing techniques with students to encourage their engagement with higher education.  
  8. Requires the ability to apply principles of positive reinforcement and goal setting.  
  9. Requires the ability to access and document student files and ensure privacy of information.  
  10. Requires the ability to communicate in a professional manner, in both formal and informal settings with students, faculty, and staff.  
  11. Requires the ability to respond to a diverse set of cultures, ethnicities, socio-economic groups, and their interests.
Physical Abilities
  1. The general physical demands, working conditions, and essential job functions associated with this classification will be kept on file with the Office of Human Resources.
  2. Essential functions will vary by position.    
  3. Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, D.E.I.A  
The position typically requires an Associate’s degree in a related field and three (3) years of program-based experience, working with student-centered programs, community, and college resources, preferably in a college setting. Additional post-baccalaureate education may substitute for some experience. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom and campus.


Licenses and Certificates
Requires a valid driver license.
 
Working Conditions 
Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Knowledge of VA benefits: Understanding the GI Bill, vocational rehabilitation, and other educational benefits offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is crucial.
  2. Understanding of veteran support organizations, mental health services, and housing assistance programs.
  3. Military or military affiliated experience.
  4. Experience in managing budgets, including grant funds. Ability to track expenses, prepare financial reports, and ensure compliance with grant guidelines.
  5. Experience prioritizing resource allocation to maximize the impact of outreach efforts.

 

Conditions of Employment

This recruitment is for one permanent full-time classified, 40 hour per week, 12-month per year, categorically funded position. The normal hours of work are Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. This position does not have a remote work option and is expected to be on campus Monday through Friday. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

Pay Philosophy

Sabbatical Leaves

Academic Senate
The Academic Senate is the governing body at each of our colleges for making recommendations to administration and to our Board of Trustees with respect to academic and professional matters. The Senate consists of elected faculty and has the responsibility for matters related to curriculum and general academic policy.

Time to Refuel
Vacation
Classified, contract staff earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Classified Management and Administrators earn 22 days vacation per year.

Sick Leave
All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your PERS and STRS retiree benefit.

Holidays
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Great Expectations
Pension Plans
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan  is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
