Required Application Materials:
The School of Art at UTSA invites applications for a Bridge to Faculty postdoctoral Research Associate in the Arts of border communities/borderlands, social transformation and community engagement, and/or health/wellness, to begin August 2025.
The Bridge to Faculty (BTF) Program is intended to increase the academic research community by supporting promising scholars and educators from various backgrounds whose life and research experiences will contribute significantly to academic excellence at UTSA and prepare them for a future faculty appointment. The purpose of the BTF program is to develop a cadre of postdoctoral fellows prepared to enter the tenure track at UTSA, by both fostering the continued development of an independent research program and supporting the development of innovative online or experiential teaching skills.
This postdoctoral position will support the development of an online MA in Art History, and specifically, a partnership with the UT Education and Research Center at Laredo and public school districts in Laredo, TX. In addition, the position will support the general curriculum and programs in the School of Art. Research specialization is open to any time period, but the School is particularly interested in scholars who are committed to interdisciplinary approaches and dialogue around border issues, community wellness, and/or arts and health. Interest in and the capacity to teach classes in museum studies is welcomed.
Robust engagement in a research agenda is expected during the fellowship, including submission of manuscript(s) for publication, participation in research and teaching development seminars, attendance and presentations at conferences, and submission of grant proposals.
The postdoctoral associate will teach one course each semester during an initial two-year term. During the fellowship, the successful candidate will primarily be expected to teach graduate level courses (both online and in-person) on topics related to their specific research interests. Travel to Laredo, TX, (approximately two driving hours from San Antonio) will be necessary approximately 2-4 times per semester as part of teaching meetings and/or program development. Occasional teaching of upper-level undergraduate and survey courses may be required as well.
During the final year of the program, Fellows will be evaluated for a tenure-track faculty appointment within the School of Art.
Candidates who have earned their PhD since August 2020 are encouraged to apply. Applicants are expected to have completed their PhD no later than the start date of this position. Applicants should submit a cover letter describing their current and future research plans as well as teaching experience, a curriculum vitae, a writing sample (a dissertation chapter with abstract and/or a related publication), and contact information for three academic references. Priority will be given to complete applications received by February 1, 2025.
This fellowship is intended to serve as part of a program expanding our School of Art and College-level partnership with Laredo schools. We continue to develop online and hybrid opportunities with this Texas region and expect the successful candidate to teach classes and grow a research agenda that serves this flourishing community. We are in an exciting and transformative era in the UTSA School of Art with two campuses and expanding interdisciplinary opportunities. We are looking to grow our art history graduate and major course offerings by adding a dynamic researcher to our faculty.
