Job Description

 

The Veteran Affairs and Recruitment will report to the Director of Admissions.

The Veteran Affairs and Recruitment will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of operations in the Veteran Affairs Education Office, including, but not limited to promoting veterans programs at D’Youville; recruiting qualified veteran students and their family members in various academic programs; providing financial and benefit information to prospective and existing veteran students and their families; maintaining working relationships with area military bases and Veteran’s support organizations; and handling reporting and other federal and state government compliance requirements and reports.

There is 8 weeks of travel with a metric of 3 Veteran Affairs Office per day, 5 days per week equating to 100-120 visits plus attending college fairs in the evening whenever possible. The university anticipates that the Admissions Counselor will generate an equitable number of student applications based on annual goals.

 Responsibilities

  • Student recruitment is a top priority of this position. The Director will be responsible for an 8-week recruitment season and making visits to 100-120 military bases, nonprofit organizations, Veteran’s centers, and/ or communities. The Director is responsible to increase applications from Veterans and their family members year over year.
  • Assist veteran students with financial aid questions and issues.
  • Work with financial aid to ensure that veteran students are properly packaged.
  • Develop policies and procedures that deal with the unique situations of veteran students
  • Counsel veteran students into appropriate academic programs based on their career goals.
  • Maintain working relationships with military bases around Western New York.
  • Act as a liaison for the college with government regulators and veteran affairs at the state, federal, and county levels.
  • Manage and prepare for all audits from the Veteran’s Administration.
  • Assist in completion of the certification of enrollment forms for veteran students claiming their GI Bill
  • Work with student accounts and the bookstore to verify enrollment for billing for students receiving benefits through Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Other duties related to veteran affairs education as determined and assigned by the Vice president for student affairs and enrollment management
  • Supervision of any staff or work study students assigned to the office.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of veteran affairs and state and federal legislation and regulations related to veteran affairs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Previous administrative and recruitment experience in an academic setting.
  • Approximately 20 percent of annual worktime is dedicated to travel and may be adjusted based on the needs of the institution. There is 8 weeks of travel during peak season with a metric of 3 schools per day, 5 days per week equating to 120 visits plus attending college fairs in the evening. Additional off-season travel may be required.
  • Possess strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with current MS Office and social networking practices.

  • Experience with admissions and enrollment CRM software.
  • Proficiency with current MS Office and social networking practices.
  • Able to represent and promote the college in a competitive environment.
  • Able to identify and recruit students who are desirable enrollees.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Possess good interpersonal skills as well as a sincere interest in student well-being and success.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, Masters preferred
  • Minimum 4 years of administrative and recruitment work experience in a college setting, preferably dealing with veteran affairs

Physical & Environmental Requirements:

  • Mental/Visual Demand and Physical Effort
  • For normal office environment must be able to lift 25 lbs from floor level.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver normal size full file box for archival purposes.
  • Must be able to occasional bend, twist, and stoop.
  • Frequent typing of computer keyboard.
