Register Nurse

Primary Purpose:
Under the general supervision of the Chairperson, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and/or Clinic Director, performs duties relevant to the organization and coordination of medical, surgical, and sterilization procedures for surgeries.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage general patient activities to include assistance with monitoring I.V. sedation and general anesthesia cases, proper documentation, and demonstration to students/Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) Residents proper perioperative nursing care (preoperative patient and operating room preparation, intraoperative monitoring, documentation, and circulator nurse duties, and postoperative recovery and discharge).
  • Maintain emergency advanced life support “crash cart” supplies and equipment on a regular basis and maintain proper records; assist as a member of medical emergency response team to include assessing immediate needs of a patient, notifying other medical personnel and emergency team members, obtaining a brief patient history, monitoring/recording vital signs, gaining I.V. access, and preparing and delivering resuscitation medications.
  • Participate in all clinic activities on a continuous basis to include monitoring student and resident adherence to practices of infection control, and total patient management throughout all surgical procedures.
  • Supervise, monitor, order and inventory adequate supplies, medications, instruments, and equipment, and maintain accurate administrative records, process vendor payment request, perform controlled substance inventories and documentation in accordance with Drug Enforcement Agency rules and regulations.
  • Follow exposure protocol and work closely with the Director of Risk Management and Environmental Safety; maintain confidential records and refer students appropriately.
  • Provide coverage for other staff members as appropriate and necessary.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Chairperson, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and/or the Clinic Director.
  • Contribute to Interprofessional Education as appropriate.



Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of:

  • Surgical procedures and practices.
  • Perioperative nursing practice
  • Peripheral IV access and delivery of sedation medications
  • Reading patient monitors and interpretation of physiologic vital signs


Ability to:

  • Instruct students and residents in proper patient management and sterile technique.
  • Administer I.V. drugs under orders of the attending OMS faculty member and/or OMS resident.
  • Instruct and evaluate residents on conduct of IV sedations and other medical procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Manage multiple priorities in a busy clinical setting.
  • Respond to medical urgencies and emergencies and assess immediate needs of patients.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the public.


Experience:

  • Minimum of six months training and/or experience in surgical nursing.


Education/Licenses:

  • Current RN license in the state of California.
  • BLS, ACLS and PALS course completion with non-expired eCards.

Working Conditions:

  • Position is eight hours per day, five days per week, overtime as needed.
  • Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens may be reasonably anticipated. Personal protective equipment will be provided to reduce or eliminate exposure to routine or limited infectious agents.



Preferred Qualifications:
Experience:

  • Previous experience in oral & maxillofacial surgery practice desirable.
  • Previous experience in perioperative nursing, preop, circulator, PACU, ICU


Education/Licenses:

  • Supplemental courses (e.g. AAORN Periop 101) or continuing education credits in patient management and surgical techniques desirable.


Other:

  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.



Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative but not definitive of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Work performed consists of a combination of sitting, standing, bending, and walking.
  • Regular lifting and moving of equipment and supplies weighing over 30 lbs.
  • Occasional lifting, sliding, or moving of patients is required.



Hiring Range: $35.87 - $53.37 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
