Job Description

The Political Science Program at Prairie View A&M University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. A Ph.D. in Political Science or related field is required. The successful candidate will join a community of faculty possessing a strong commitment to quality teaching, maintaining an active, forward-thinking research agenda, and performing service to the university, community, and profession. The teaching load is typically 9 credit hours per semester (fall and spring).

Applicants must have an academic background/ability to teach courses in political science including political theory/political thought. Candidates are expected to show commitment to excellence in teaching, maintain classroom management and effectiveness, and be responsive to student needs. Teaching with innovative pedagogies is desired.

Scholarly responsibilities include maintaining an active research agenda yielding regular publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, making professional presentations, and pursuing and obtaining internal and external grant funding. Published research is expected and is a requirement for tenure and promotion. Candidates are expected to actively participate in service relevant to the Political Science Program, the Brailsford College of Arts & Sciences, and the University. Responsibilities:
  • Effectively teach survey courses in American and Texas Government and upper division courses in the candidate's specialty.
  • Maintain online teaching certification credentials and offer asynchronous online and hybrid courses.
  • Participate in Program-level duties such as academic assessment, student advising, student development, and curriculum enhancement.
  • Seek external and internal grant funding.
  • Maintain an active research agenda, leading to peer-reviewed publications and conference proceedings.
  • Perform service beneficial to the Department, the College, and the University, as well as the community (locally, regionally, and globally) and the profession.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Political Science.
  • Three years of teaching experience in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach political science courses in political theory/political thought.


Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching political science courses in political theory/political thought.
  • Experience teaching American Government and Texas Government survey courses.
  • Experience developing and teaching online courses
  • Experience conducting program assessment
  • Experience in academic advisement.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach Scope and Methods in Political Science.
  • An active scholarship/research program.
