General Information:
The James Madison University School of Music seeks an outstanding teacher-scholar for our full-time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Musicology. We seek a candidate passionate about teaching a wide variety of courses both within and across traditional curricular boundaries. The successful candidate will demonstrate and maintain an active research agenda appropriate to JMU's R2 institutional designation. All research specializations will be considered, particularly those that complement those of our current musicology and ethnomusicology faculty.
The School of Music is an active program with about 360 undergraduate majors, 75 graduate students (DMA and MM), and 200 music minors. Musicology faculty teach alongside 45 full-time faculty and 25 part-time faculty in a School that produces more than 250 performances and presentations annually, promoting a vibrant culture of research, scholarship, and creative activity. Housed within the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the School of Music offers the Bachelor of Music in music performance, music education, composition, music theatre, and music industry; the Bachelor of Arts in Music with concentrations in Music Studies and Music Industry; Master's degrees in composition, conducting, music education, and music performance; and Doctoral degrees in Performance, Pedagogy and Literature and Conducting, Pedagogy and Literature.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching responsibilities include: courses in our innovative undergraduate musicology/ethnomusicology core curriculum; topical musicology seminars at the undergraduate and graduate level; doctoral-level courses in music history pedagogy; general education courses; advising undergraduate and doctoral research; and other possibilities according to the faculty member's interests and expertise.

● PhD in Musicology. ABD candidates will be considered with the requirement that the degree must be completed before March 1, 2026
● Evidence of effective, creative, dynamic teaching
● Evidence of a clear research agenda with a growing record of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
● Experience teaching in musicology or related areas at the collegiate level
● Facility and interest in teaching across traditional curricular boundaries (e.g. musicology and ethnomusicology; popular music, jazz, art music, film music, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:
● At least three years teaching experience at the collegiate level
● Evidence of effective teaching at the graduate level
● Scholarly engagement with the pedagogy of music history, musicology, and ethnomusicology
