Summary:

The Assistant Track and Field Coach supports the head coach in the coaching duties of the NCAA D-III Track and Field program in accordance and compliance with NCAA, North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) and The College of Wooster policies and regulations. The assistant coach position will also participate in all aspects of recruitment, training of student-athletes, and the total organization and administration of the program, as assigned. Additionally, this position serves as the Intramural Sports Coordinator with the responsibility to oversee and coordinate the intramural sports program during the academic year.

Essential Departmental Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in planning, development, and direction of all team training and conditioning activities at a level that will improve the Track and Field program's position of competitive leadership in the North Coast Athletic Conference and the NCAA Division III.
  • Contributes to developing a recruitment strategy for prospective student athletes, informing prospects of academic programs, talent evaluations, coordinating mailings, telephone calls and text messages, and email exchanges.
  • Supports recruiting academically and athletically strong applicants for the selective and competitive applicant pool at The College of Wooster in partnership with the Office of Admissions.
  • Performs administrative operations including budgeting, team travel, room reservations, meals, and equipment procurement (in coordination with Purchasing).
  • In partnership with the Office of Advancement, assists the Head Coach in developing and maintaining a strong alumni and parent support system and assists with fundraising efforts.
  • Assists in developing a strong social media platform.
  • Engages team members in community service activities.
  • Fulfills additional duties in teaching, committee work, and administration as determined annually by leadership.
  • All coaches may be assigned additional duties in the area of facility and game management as determined annually by leadership.
  • Oversees all Intramural Sports teams and events to ensures adherence to campus policies and procedures as well as coordinates all programming.
  • Works with the Department of Athletics for the approval and budgeting of the Intramural Sport program.
  • Aids Intramural Sports teams with purchasing, facility reservations and competition logistics
  • Hires and supervises all student workers for competition as well as events.
  • Serves as an active member of the athletic department's team, responsible for providing leadership, goals, and program implementation to our nearly 2,000 undergraduate students.
  • Cultivates and maintains mutually collaborative working relationships with student affairs colleagues, faculty, and other campus partners to accomplish shared objectives.
  • Leads and assists with designated departmental, divisional, and/or College committees, initiatives and processes.
  • Develops meaningful connections with students, staff and faculty by being available and visible on campus.
  • Creates a welcoming environment emphasizing inclusion and the development of diverse identities, beliefs, and voices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



Job Requirements:
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • One to two years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience; knowledge and understanding of the sport.
  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations and guidelines governing the recruitment and retention of student-athletes
  • Proven prior success in coaching the throwing events, Shot Put, Discus, Hammer, Javelin & Weight Throw preferred.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification is required (and can be completed after hire)

  • Knowledge of teaching technical skills in the sport of Track and Field
  • Capacity to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Skill in solving practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Basic Word/Excel and ability to learn and operate recruiting software.
  • Other attributes flexibility, collaboration, takes initiative, and works well independently.

Work Environment:

  • The Assistant Coach is required to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, or holidays.
  • Travel for athletic contests, recruiting, coaches' meetings and convention/caucus attendance is required.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the Assistant Coach regularly travels in outside weather conditions and is exposed to wet or humid conditions, extreme temperatures, dirt, and dust.
  • The ability to obtain College driver certification is desirable.



Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The individual must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Some heavy lifting / moving equipment is required.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
