Creative Writing Postgraduate Teaching Fellow/Lecturer

Position Summary:

  • Teach three sections per semester, including introductory-level composition courses in academic writing; intermediate-level composition courses in academic writing and/or narrative nonfiction; and upper-level special topics course open to graduate and undergraduate creative writing students. The remaining teaching load will depend upon program needs and the successful candidate’s area of expertise. Modalities may include face-to-face, hybrid, and online asynchronous.
  • Assist with the selection process for the Meijer Visiting Writers Series and possibly read as a Meijer Visiting Writer during the spring semester.
  • Organize and direct a spring creative writing festival at the end of April.
  • Serve on the editorial board of the Summit Series for CMICH Press.
  • Engage in professional development activities within the department (as needed).
  • Fixed-term faculty are invited, but not required, to join department committees.


Required Qualifications:

  • PhD or MFA in a relevant field within the past three years by the start of employment.
  • Experience teaching college composition and developmental writing.
  • Significant publication required, such as publications of creative work in national literary journals or publication of book of fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction by independent, university, or commercial press.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training in fiction writing, poetry writing, or both, and will also consider scholars with experience in creative nonfiction and screen- or play-writing.
  • Experience teaching online or in hybrid delivery formats.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Expertise in contemporary writing by African American, Latinx, Native American, Asian or Pacific Islander, LGBTQ, and Feminist authors is strongly desired.

About the Department:

The Department of English Language & Literature is part of the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences and is located in Anspach Hall on the main campus in Mount Pleasant, MI.
