Executive Director of Finance and Administration

Primary Purpose:
The Executive Director of Finance and Operations will serve as a strategic and intentional partner to the Dean, offering a sophisticated financial skillset for discussions and planning. The role provides creative and forward-thinking insights about the school's administrative, financial, and operational needs to the Dean and members of senior leadership. Additionally, serve as the primary business advisor to the Dean, overseeing financial, technology services, capital projects and facilities for the school. This includes a focus on instructional programs, and budget forecasting, working closely with Department Chairs and Directors across the school.

As a member of the school's senior leadership team, the person in the role safeguards the School and University's assets and facilities, ensuring the integrity and effective utilization of these resources. The Executive Director of Finance and Operations will be responsible for budget preparation, providing financial reports with analysis for the Dean and stakeholders, and creating financial models and forecasts'; serve as a resource, consultant, and strategic problem solver for Department Chairs and other leaders within the school and a proactive partner and connector to a range of stakeholders across the University.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides critical assessment and recommendation on the financial and operational implications of new initiatives and programs and ensures internal financial and management controls are in place. Prepares financial and other statistical reports, including aggregating unit-specific financial information at the department level. Generates reports to accommodate a diverse set of needs and users. Acts as the Dean's designee for all activities related to finance, technology, and facilities.
  • Responsible for the strategic management of all financial resources within the school, including the use of restricted and non-restricted funding, (i.e., current funds, endowments, special faculty projects, and research). Manages post-award financials and contract functions. Directs business aspects of all endowments, scholarships, grants, and contracts for the school, including spending allocations, contract review, negotiations, approval, and management. Manages School funds/awards, including balances, detailed tracking of awards, compliance with parameters and University policies and procedures, and providing information to the Provost's Office, Office of Annual Giving, Dean, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manages the School's facilities and technology and drafts multiyear facilities repair and replacement plan and budget expenditures for this plan. Directs the operations of facilities, maintenance, renovation, and construction for School of Health Sciences utilized buildings. Analyzes, prioritizes, and implements priorities related to capital improvements, alterations, forecasting space allocations, and new projects.
  • Human Resources: Advises the Dean on workforce planning, position control, and human resources. Manages financial hiring commitments and supports diversity hiring practices.
  • Oversees and manages the School of Health Sciences Technology Services Unit which includes a Technical Operations Manager and three (3) FTEs. Will also manage a Business Specialist.
  • Serve as the Security, Compliance, and Emergency Preparedness for School safety and security, emergency preparedness, and compliance with risk management policies and procedures, in conjunction with university partners.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant financial experience.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant operations experience.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten (10) years of related work experience.
  • Working knowledge of HRIS system, Banner.


Skills/Knowledge and Expertise:

  • Strong computer skills including intermediate to advance Microsoft Office skills and substantial experience with accounting software.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and summarize complex data into recommendations for management.
  • Ability to research data, often using multiple sources, to respond to requests for others.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of grants and sponsored programs.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and business practices, thorough knowledge of the University's accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently with critical deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Capacity to promote teamwork in a collaborative environment.
  • Experience in operations management.
  • Previous experience in higher education environment.
  • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with the use of a computer and phone. Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using a computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking, walking across campus, climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work is typically performed during standard business hours. Occasional evening and/or weekend hours may be required. Occasional travel may be required.

Hiring Range: $98,861.56 - $135,943.09 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
