Job Description

 

 

The Department of History of Art and Visual Studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position in African American and African Diaspora art and visual culture, including areas such as African American art, visual culture of the Black Atlantic, African art, critical and comparative theories of Blackness, intersections of Blackness with Western art and its institutions, and with indigenous and global south networks. We welcome applicants who work in diverse methodologies, genres, and historical periods, including early modern, modern, and contemporary art. Candidates should have teaching experience and be conversant with interdisciplinary methodologies.

The appointment requires a 2-2 teaching load (typically one lecture course and one seminar each semester) and includes an introductory course, intermediate-level courses of broad interest to students, and advanced undergraduate and graduate seminars on topics of the candidate’s choosing. Responsibilities include teaching, advising, and service to the department and the university. They include occasionally designing and delivering First-Year Writing Seminars (FWS) on a topic of interest in their field, and teaching Cornell’s Advising Seminar for first-year students periodically. Applicant is expected to contribute to the Department’s curriculum’s development, and design, and engage with students, staff, and faculty working across a range of disciplines on campus.
