Position Summary:
This position provides leadership in the direction and administration of international student and scholar services (ISSS), including supervising the ISSS staff, overseeing compliance with F-1 Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) regulations enacted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the J1 Exchange Visitor Program, overseeing ISSS advising and programming, and collaborating with campus partners to promote international student success.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree.
At least 1 year of experience serving as a Designated School Official (DSO), working with immigration regulations (preferable F and J regulations), SEVIS, and international student advising in an academic setting.
Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and project a positive image.
Ability to work independently and as an effective team member.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree.
Supervisory experience.
Experience living or studying outside the United States.
Involvement in international education professional associations.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Coordinates overall direction and administration of international student and scholar services (ISSS) at CMU in consultation with the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) Executive Director.
Advocates on behalf of ISSS and international students among campus partners.
Recommends and maintains policies and procedures related to ISSS in coordination with campus partners (recruitment/admissions, student billing, student affairs, student employment, academic advisors, faculty and department heads, etc.).
Assumes primary responsibility for managing the F-1 Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) as the Principal Designated School Official.
Responsible for understanding, interpreting, implementing and executing procedures to ensure university compliance with SEVIS regulations enacted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Updates CMU’s I-17 and applies for DHS Recertification.
Responds to government agency requests as necessary.
Provides oversight of the J1 Exchange Visitor Program.
Manages ISSS staff, supports their ongoing development, and actively addresses personnel concerns. Hires, trains, and evaluates staff.
Leads advising to international students on obtaining and maintaining student immigration status, prepares documents for DHS applications, employment authorization, and travel.
Oversees new international student arrivals and orientation experiences.
Oversees ongoing programming to support international student success and well-being.
Serves as advisor to international students for cultural/social differences, campus policies and procedures, personal and financial matters, and other areas of concerns to the international student population at CMU.
Drafts and executes strategic plans for ISSS operations in consultation with the OGE Executive Director.
Manages ISSS budget in alignment with unit strategic goals and in coordination with OGE Executive Director.
Serves as primary point of contact for international student emergencies and respond to escalated situations as necessary.
Acts as the liaison with CMU’s Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity (OCRIE), CMU Police, Student Conduct, and other campus partners as necessary to respond to reported incidents involving the ISSS population.
Serves as the point of contact for sponsored employment authorization cases in coordination with Human Resources, Faculty Personnel Services, hiring departments, and CMU’s outside counsel.
Ensures the integrity of ISSS data and responds to data requests as needed.
Develops and executes an assessment plan that regularly evaluates effectiveness of ISSS advising and programming.
Acts as the liaison with CMU’s Risk Management Office regarding the international student health insurance policy.
Advises international student organizations and provides necessary assistance with organization activities, fundraising, and campus events as needed.
Stays informed of industry best practices, trends, and discussions.
Develops and maintains professional relationships with external experts such as NAFSA, MAIE, SEVP field rep, etc.
Regularly communicates with the OGE Executive Director and other campus stakeholders to provide relevant and timely updates on ISSS operations.
Contributes to OGE-wide initiatives to support campus internationalization.
Contributes to OGE leadership discussions and decisions.
Communicates regularly with other OGE staff to implement office-related processes and procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned.
