Job Description

 

The College of Engineering and Computer Sciences at Marshall University invites applications for one tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to support the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (concentration in Industrial & Systems Engineering), Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety and Health and the M.S. in Environmental Safety & Health degree programs in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering. The preferred start date for the position is August 2025.

The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering offers two undergraduate degrees and one graduate degree: a B.S.E. in Engineering (concentration in Industrial & Systems Engineering), B.S. in Occupational Safety & Health, and an M.S. in Environmental Safety & Health. Additionally, the department participates in the Ph.D. in Engineering that the college offers. The Department is housed in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, a multi-disciplinary college with a wide range of faculty expertise and interests. The new state-of-the-art Arthur Weisberg Family Applied Engineering Complex was opened in 2015.

The department also seeks a candidate who will contribute to the University’s general education curriculum and its emphasis on using high-impact teaching practices, particularly those affiliated with one (or more) of the institution’s pedagogical initiatives (e.g., Community-based Learning, Critical Thinking, First Year Seminar, Writing Across the Curriculum, etc.). Additionally, the ideal candidate will contribute to the College’s support of interdisciplinary programs of study.

Candidates interviewing on campus must have official transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) forwarded directly to the chair of the search committee by their degree granting institutions, prior to an on-campus interview.

Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of the Department, the position of assistant/associate professor will:

1.       Teach, undergraduate Industrial Engineering courses, undergraduate Occupational Safety & Health courses and graduate Safety & Health courses and laboratories.

2.       Advise and mentor students.

3.       Be actively engaged in research/scholarly, teaching, advising, professional development and service activities.

4.       Initiate a vigorous research program and publish scholarship in refereed journals.

5.       Apply for internal and external funding in support of teaching, research and professional service.

6.       Supervise student research.

7.       Participate in professional activities, including meetings, workshops and other relevant activities including establishing appropriate relationships with industry.

8.       Participate in activities related to ABET accreditation through both the Applied and Natural Sciences and Engineering Accreditation Commissions.

 

The position is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment at the Assistant or Associate professor level, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

1.       An earned doctoral degree in Industrial Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Engineering, or a closely related field is preferred. Board certification in Safety or Industrial Hygiene is also desirable. The candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence and have the ability and experience to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

2.       Candidates should be able to develop funded research and possess an ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

3.       Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communications skills.

4.       Demonstrated strong commitment to and potential for teaching excellence at the undergraduate level.

5.       Demonstrated ability to develop and teach courses and laboratories.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to establish a strong research program, teach in the aforementioned programs, help define and grow the newly established B.S.E. concentration in Industrial Engineering undergraduate degree program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and contribute to mentoring students, including those from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. The successful candidates will also be expected to contribute to an environment that nurtures collaboration among researchers across the College and University. The successful candidates will also participate in outreach and contribute to departmental, college, and university service. In these, and other ways, the faculty member will help to develop innovative approaches to enhancing student engagement, increasing diversity, ensuring equity, and expanding collaborations with community and business partners.
