The University of Texas at San Antonio School of Music invites applications for a tenure-track position as Director of the UTSA Orchestra at the rank of Assistant Professor.

THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL AND FINE ARTS. The UTSA School of Music is housed within the College of Liberal and Fine Arts (COLFA). COLFA is on an accelerated trajectory of transformation and growth fueled by three major drivers: reimagining the humanities, recommitting to arts education, and bolstering social science research. In addition to the School of Art, COLFA has established a new School of Music and is moving forward with the establishment of a new interdisciplinary School designed to further collaborative engagement and discovery around the intersections of grand challenges facing society and the human experience. The successful candidate will play a leading role in the process of developing COLFA, and is expected to hold a substantial appointment and effort in the School of Music.

 



UTSA ARTS: UTSA Arts is an organized research unit within the College of Liberal and Fine Arts designed to foster interconnections between the arts within UTSA and to extend the impact of creative activity to the wider San Antonio community. It connects the varied aspects of the world to our community through world class programs, exhibits, and performances, leveraging partnerships with other arts organizations in San Antonio, across Texas, and the nation. UTSA Arts sponsors educational programs for the benefit of people of all ages and backgrounds who desire to develop their creative abilities in a safe and supportive learning community. Finally, UTSA Arts is a makerspace that fosters collaborations in the arts and facilitates research related to the arts in the community.

THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC: The UTSA School of Music cultivates innovation, artistry, and scholarship while amplifying the cultural wealth of San Antonio and enriching our community through music and performing arts. We empower students by nurturing their musicianship, integrating their personal values and goals into their professional identities, and fostering discovery and growth.

 



The School of Music offers degree programs leading to the Bachelor of Music in music education, performance, composition, and music marketing, a Bachelor of Arts in Music, including a new option for a Bachelor of Arts in commercial and digital music, and the Master of Music in music education, conducting, performance, and performance/pedagogy. The faculty comprises more than 60 full- and part-time members who serve a student body of approximately 300 undergraduate and graduate students. The School of Music occupies a facility that includes a 500-seat Recital Hall, two large rehearsal halls, practice rooms, classrooms, piano and music technology labs, and faculty studios and offices. The UTSA String Project is an award-winning member of The National String Project Consortium, offering beginning through advanced level music instruction to community students on string instruments and classical guitar. Through the UTSA String Project, music education majors have the opportunity to develop skills needed to become successful artist-teachers. UTSA is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

 



Position Summary

 



The School of Music at the University of Texas at San Antonio seeks qualified applicants for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Music to serve as Director of the UTSA Orchestra.

 



The successful candidate will conduct and serve as music director for the UTSA Orchestra, a full symphony orchestra serving as a premiere ensemble for the School of Music. The position entails collaborating with other ensembles and faculty, including conducting the orchestra for a yearly opera, organizing the Concerto and Aria Competition, and holding auditions. Additional responsibilities may include teaching conducting for instrumental music education majors, offering conducting lessons for graduate students, administrative oversight of the UTSA String Project, or other courses depending on the candidate's areas of expertise and departmental need. The successful candidate is expected to recruit for the School of Music and engage in scholarship and service as part of a tenure track appointment. Salary and supporting start-up packages are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess:

  • An earned doctorate in music (ABD candidates will be considered).
  • Evidence of successful conducting experience with university and/or semi-professional/professional orchestras.
  • Demonstrated artistic leadership, excellence, and collaboration in cultivating and managing a large orchestra program, and evidence of effective recruiting.
  • The successful candidate must also demonstrate an ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of various urban populations, supporting the University's commitment as a Hispanic Serving Institution and a model for student success.

     


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Public school or university teaching experience, a record of service, and evidence of creative/scholarly contributions to the field, including guest conducting and demonstrated success in regional and/or national music venues.
