Description: The University of Notre Dame's Keough School of Global Affairs invites applicants for two Assistant Professors focused in the areas of media and communication studies and translation studies, with regional specialization in Asia. We seek candidates who pursue an active, interdisciplinary research agenda informed by relevant critical theory, contributing to the understanding of the role of media, communication, and/or translation in public and private life and in global affairs. We are especially interested in scholars whose work brings together aspects of East Asian or South Asian cultures with aspects of the study of politics and the concept of democracy. Duties include research, teaching and service.
The professorship will be based in the Keough School, which promotes interdisciplinary and policy-relevant research on critical issues in global affairs, transformative educational programs, and partnerships for global engagement. The Keough School approaches global affairs and development through a focus on integrated human development, which is also central to the University of Notre Dame's mission. The successful candidate will also be appointed as an affiliated faculty member of the Keough School's Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, which provides a forum for integrated and multidisciplinary research and teaching on Asia, both within the Keough School and across the University as a whole.
Qualifications:
Competitive candidates for this professorship will have a scholarly track record with evidence of potential for high-quality research and, ideally, policy engagement in global and national discussions on media, communication, and/or translation. A PhD from any discipline is acceptable provided the candidate's research includes deep expertise in the areas of media and communication studies and translation studies, with regional specialization in Asia. ABD candidates will be considered for an entry level position. Native or near-native fluency in at least one Asian language and active engagement with relevant communities in Asia are expected.
The University of Notre Dame seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection of our commitment to our Catholic tradition, to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives and ways of knowing and learning. The Keough School is committed to fostering a culture of diverse views and approaches to Global Affairs. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or service has prepared them to contribute to our mission and commitment to diversity and excellence. All applicants whose scholarly pursuits will enhance our ability to fulfill that commitment are encouraged to apply.

The University of Notre Dame was founded in November 1842 by Rev. Edward F. Sorin, C.S.C., a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, a French missionary order. It is located adjacent to South Bend, Indiana, the center of a metropolitan area with a population of more than 300,000. Chartered by the state of Indiana in 1844, the University was governed by the Holy Cross priests until 1967, when governance was transferred to a two-tiered, mixed board of lay and religious trustees and fellows.
Notre Dame has grown from the vision of Father Sorin, who sought to establish a great Catholic university in America, and has remained faithful to both its religious and intellectual traditions. Over the years, Notre Dame has been a place where the Catholic Church could do its thinking. The first national study of Catholic elementary and secondary education was done at Notre Dame, as was the most extensive study of Catholic parish life and a landmark historical study of the Hispanic Catholic community in the United States.
One of America’s leading undergraduate teaching institutions, Notre Dame also has been at the forefront in research and scholarship. The aerodynamics of glider flight, the transmission of wireless messages, and the formulae for synthetic rubber were pioneered at the University. Today researchers are achieving breakthroughs in astrophysics, radiation chemistry, environmental sciences, tropical disease transmission, peace studies, cancer, robotics, and nanoelectronics.
Notre Dame always has been heavily residential, with about four in five undergraduates living on campus. Students come to Notre Dame to learn not only how to think but also how to live, and often the experiences alumni carry from residence hall communities at Notre Dame remain vivid over a lifetime. The University always has attracted scholars who are interested in teaching and scholarship, men and women who know that a Notre Dame education is more than what is taught in classrooms and laboratories.
Notre Dame has a unique spirit. It is traditional, yet open to change. It is dedicated to religious belief no less than to scientific knowledge. It has always stood for values in a world of facts. It has kept faith with Father Sorin’s vision.
