Job Description

Missouri Western State University’s College of Science and Health and the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics invites applications for a non-tenure track Professor of Practice in Computer Science position beginning in January 2025. The position will be renewable annually based on performance and the department’s needs.

Professors of Practice teach in discipline areas in which they have specific training and competence. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses related to computer science, and potentially, cybersecurity. The instructor is expected to plan, organize, and teach in a manner that facilitates student learning in keeping with the learning-centered values and goals of the university.
 
Duties for candidates for Professor of Practice position include performance of activities corresponding with the teaching and service expectations for the department and college. These duties are a representative sample of the types of duties and level of responsibilities that will be required; and shall not be construed as a declaration of the total of the specific duties and responsibilities of this position.

We seek colleagues with disciplinary expertise and professional experience in computer science, an aptitude for exceptional teaching. The Professor of Practice position is primarily a teaching position with an emphasis on industry experience and knowledge.
 
Teaching:
    • Develop and manage course content and curricular materials ensuring that they meet departmental and university standards.
    • Document students’ attendance, participation, and academic progress by giving and grading assignments, projects, quizzes and/or examinations that lead to a final grade.
    • Participate in programs that promote instructional development in the discipline, and campus initiatives related to teaching such as learning communities, honors programs, and applied learning.
    • Maintain currency in computer science and information technology.

 


Service:
  • Provide academic advising and support related to the academic progress of students.
  • Be accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods of time for counseling and mentoring students in matters related to academic success.
  • Engage in service activities in support of departmental, college, university, and community needs.
  • Participate in relevant professional organizations and student recruitment and retention efforts as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (or higher) in computer science, cybersecurity, information technology, or a closely related field, or Bachelor’s degree and other qualifications based on the University’s tested experience criteria.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industrial experience in software engineering, database, networking, operating systems and/or related experience.
  • Although teaching experience is not required, the qualified candidate will have a strong interest in teaching and advising students who are interested in the field.
